Catalonia faces transport collapse as buses buckle under pressure

Why Catalonia's railway trouble could hit residents much harder than expected, according to experts, with new risks and unexpected turns ahead

Transport chaos continues in Catalonia: while train services have only been partially restored, buses are stretched to their limits. Authorities promise a quick resolution, but passengers grapple with delays and uncertainty. Why has the situation spiraled out of control, and what lies ahead for the region in the coming days? Here’s a closer look.

In recent days, the transportation situation in Catalonia has become a real challenge for thousands of residents. After serious disruptions in the Rodalies rail network, many passengers have been forced to seek alternative ways to get around. This is more than just an inconvenience—for many, it means the difference between reaching work, school, or medical appointments on time. With familiar routes suddenly unavailable, even minor delays become major issues, and public dissatisfaction is growing by the day.

On Wednesday, Renfe announced the partial restoration of train service on the stretch between Arenys de Mar and Blanes. This section includes crucial R1 and RG1 lines connecting Barcelona and Girona with coastal towns. Until now, the entire route had been serviced solely by buses, dramatically increasing demand and overloading the bus depots. Although trains are running again between L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Blanes, the Blanes to Maçanet Massanes segment remains without rail service—buses continue to run here.

The bus rush

The Catalan authorities and Renfe representatives claim that alternative routes are running reliably, but in practice, the situation is far from ideal. Around 150 buses have been mobilized to make up for the shortage of trains, yet even this has proven insufficient to fully meet passenger demand. During peak hours, long lines form at stops, and drivers have to work under emergency conditions. Many passengers complain about lack of information, delays, and overcrowded vehicles.

For the past four days, with train service completely halted, the region has experienced true transport chaos. Only on Tuesday was it possible to achieve a partial restoration of order, yet even now, enhanced bus routes remain in effect on 11 sections of the network. In total, 145 additional buses are running, but this is still not enough to fully meet demand.

Repairs under pressure

While passengers try to adapt to the new conditions, railway services have been working around the clock. Adif, the company responsible for infrastructure, reported urgent repairs underway on 29 sections of the Rodalies network. Over 50 specialized teams have been assembled, already carrying out 116 technical inspections. As a result, numerous issues requiring immediate attention have been identified.

The R3 and R4 lines have been hit particularly hard, with delays and train cancellations becoming the norm. Authorities promise that the situation will stabilize by the beginning of next week, but many experts doubt that such large-scale work can be completed in such a short time. Meanwhile, passengers are forced to cope with uncertainty and adjust their plans on a daily basis.

Waiting for change

Officials emphasize that the main task now is to restore residents’ trust in the Rodalies system and ensure uninterrupted transport service. However, after several days of chaos and constant schedule changes, this won’t be easy. Many Catalonia residents are already voicing their discontent on social media, demanding greater transparency and concrete action from the authorities.

For now, the region is living in anticipation: some are hoping for a quick return to familiar routes, some are searching for alternative ways to get around, and others are simply tired of the constant upheaval. One thing is clear — the transport crisis in Catalonia has become a real ordeal for everyone who relies on the railway system every day.
