DGT Explains How Geolocation of New V16 Emergency Beacons for Cars Works in Spain

Are V16 devices secretly tracking drivers? What we really know about the new gadgets

Starting in 2026, Spain will mandate the use of V16 emergency beacons in vehicles. Many drivers are concerned about being tracked. DGT has clarified exactly how the system works and what happens to personal data. Find out what every driver needs to know.

Starting January 1, 2026, all motorists in Spain will be required to carry a special emergency beacon called V16. This device will replace the traditional warning triangles and become a mandatory piece of equipment for cars, buses, trucks, and other vehicles.

The main function of the V16 is to alert other road users to a car stopped on the road by means of a bright flashing light. However, this new technology has sparked debate: many are concerned that the built-in GPS and SIM card could enable authorities to track drivers’ movements at any time.

In response to these concerns, road authorities clarified that while the V16 is indeed equipped with a geolocation module and can transmit the vehicle’s coordinates, it only sends data when the device is activated—meaning when the beacon is turned on to signal an emergency stop. In normal conditions, the device does not transmit location information and is not linked to any personal data of the owner or the vehicle.

Here’s how the system works: when the V16 is activated, it automatically sends a signal with the coordinates to a dedicated road services platform. This allows other drivers and emergency services to be quickly informed about obstacles on the road, reducing the risk of further accidents. Once the beacon is switched off, data transmission stops.

It is important to note that there is no direct connection between the device and the driver’s personal data. The beacon does not store or transmit information about the owner, nor is it connected to other electronic systems in the car. All data is used solely to improve road safety and prevent accidents.

To avoid purchasing a counterfeit, it is recommended to check for official certification. The device casing should feature a special code beginning with the letters LCOE or IDAE. You can also consult the official list of approved models to verify the legality of the purchased beacon.

Installing the V16 is as simple as it gets: the device attaches to the car roof using a magnet, allowing drivers to stay off the roadway. Its bright light is visible from up to a kilometer away, providing timely warnings to other road users.

In the coming months, certified V16 models will become widely available in stores and dealerships across the country. Drivers are advised to familiarize themselves with the requirements in advance and choose the appropriate option to avoid fines and improve their safety on the road.
