The morning in the port of Vilanova de Arousa began with an alarming report: a car with a person inside had ended up in the water. The alert came in around eight o’clock when officers of the Guardia Civil noticed a vehicle submerged in the sea. All emergency services in the region were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The rescue operation involved specialists from the maritime rescue service, the Gardacostas de Galicia team, emergency medical personnel, firefighters from Vilagarcía, as well as local police and Civil Protection volunteers. Divers began their search as soon as they arrived, and by nine in the morning, the man’s body had been found underwater.
The cause of the tragedy has yet to be determined. It is known only that the driver was inside the vehicle when it plunged into the sea. Emergency crews remain on site working to establish all the circumstances of the incident. The port of Vilanova de Arousa has temporarily restricted access to outsiders to avoid interfering with the specialists’ work.
This is not the first such incident in the region in recent times. In November of last year, a similar tragedy occurred in Menorca, where a 67-year-old man died after his car also ended up in the water at the port of Ciutadella. Such incidents have raised concerns among local residents and tourists, as ports remain high-risk areas, especially in the early morning hours.
A technical inspection of the vehicle is currently underway and surveillance footage is being analyzed to determine whether this was an accident or if other factors were involved. Official conclusions are expected after all necessary examinations are completed.
