EU Halts Multiple-Entry Visas for Russians: New Schengen Entry Rules

New Schengen Changes: Russians Now Need a Separate Visa for Every Trip to Europe

The European Commission has introduced new restrictions for Russian citizens. From now on, each trip to EU countries will require a separate visa. Multiple-entry visas are no longer issued—find out what this means for travelers.

Starting in 2025, Russian citizens will no longer be able to obtain multiple-entry Schengen visas for travel to Europe. The European Commission has officially announced the termination of multiple-entry visas as part of a new package of restrictive measures. From now on, Russians will have to apply for a new visa for each trip to EU countries, even if these trips are back-to-back.

Previously, Russians could get a multiple-entry visa that allowed them to freely travel across Schengen countries over an extended period. However, the new rules completely eliminate this opportunity. Now, when planning any trip, Russian citizens will have to go through the entire visa application process each time, significantly complicating and increasing the cost of travel.

These changes are connected to the European Union’s tightened policies toward Russia. Although a complete visa ban has not been imposed, the new rules effectively make European travel less accessible for Russians. EU authorities emphasize that this decision is not temporary and will remain in place until further notice.

The reaction to these changes in Russia has been predictably negative. Many point out that even short trips, such as weekend visits or business trips, will now become more difficult. Travel agencies are already forecasting reduced demand for European destinations among Russians. At the same time, the European Commission does not rule out further changes to visa policy if the situation calls for additional measures.

It remains unclear how the new rules will affect citizens of other countries with ties to Russia, as well as those who already hold valid multiple-entry visas. However, it is clear that for most Russians, traveling to Europe will now involve significantly more difficulties and take much more time.
