On Saturday morning, a tragedy occurred on the island of Tenerife: in the port of Puerto de La Cruz, a powerful wave suddenly crashed onto the promenade, knocking down a group of people. As a result, a woman died and nine others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Among the injured were six French citizens who were out for a walk when the wave struck. The other victims were local residents and visitors to the island. Preliminary reports indicate the incident happened around 11:30 a.m., when the sea was rough and waves were periodically breaking onto the shore.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. A medical helicopter and two ambulances were deployed to rescue those swept into the water. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where they received the necessary medical care. Some are reported to be in moderate condition, but their lives are not in danger.
Local authorities have urged residents and tourists to exercise caution in coastal areas, especially during periods of rough seas. Officials also reminded the public to monitor weather warnings and to avoid approaching the water’s edge during storms.
This incident has once again highlighted how dangerous the elements can be, even in familiar and popular holiday destinations. The Canary Islands attract thousands of tourists every year, but natural phenomena here require particular care and vigilance.
