A loss that seemed irreversible

Six months had passed since Groucho disappeared, and hope of seeing him alive had nearly faded. Time went by, but the search brought no results.

The statistics are grim: most missing house cats return home within the first five days, usually not venturing far from their old home. After a week, the odds of finding a lost pet drop sharply, and after three months, they are almost nil. For Groucho’s family, these numbers meant one thing — coming to terms with the loss.
However, life sometimes brings surprises. More than five years had passed, and no one expected a miracle anymore. But that’s exactly what happened — in neighboring Griñón, just three kilometers from where he disappeared, a stray cat was brought to a veterinary clinic. A man who had been feeding him in his yard decided to take care of the animal before the cold weather set in and brought him in for a check-up.
An Unexpected Encounter and Long-Awaited Reunion
At the clinic, it turned out the cat had a microchip. After a call to the number listed in the database, it became clear this was Groucho, believed to have died long ago. The owner couldn’t believe what had happened and hurried to the clinic. The reunion was deeply moving: the cat immediately recognized his family and even his old friend — the second cat he once shared a home with.
Veterinarians noted that stories like this are extremely rare. House cats rarely survive on the street for so long, especially if they haven’t joined a feral colony or found a new owner. Groucho managed to endure years of wandering, though his health had suffered: he lost weight, developed kidney problems, and tested positive for feline leukemia. Despite this, he remained affectionate and quickly settled back in at home, as if those long years apart had never happened.
