In the coming days, residents of the northwestern regions of Spain will experience the full force of autumn weather. From early Friday morning, a dense band of clouds will settle over the area, bringing prolonged rainfall and gusty winds. Weather warnings are expected in some areas: local authorities are already preparing for possible consequences.
The situation is expected to be especially challenging in Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia, as well as in some parts of Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, and Extremadura. Rain will persist here for several hours, and winds may reach dangerous speeds, particularly in mountain areas and along the Galician coast. Meanwhile, in the east of the country and on the Balearic Islands, cloud cover will be mostly high with little chance of rain.
Temperatures will also change: in the north and center of the country, the mercury will drop, most noticeably in the Meseta region and along the coast of Cantabria. At the same time, in other regions, including the south and the islands, it will get slightly warmer. In some parts of Cantabria, nights will be warmer than usual for this time of year.
Winds will pick up across nearly all of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. The strongest gusts are expected in the mountain ranges, northern Galicia, and the Pyrenees. In some areas of the northwest, such as Coruña and Lugo, squalls may occur, potentially damaging power lines and disrupting traffic. Meanwhile, the Canary Islands will enjoy calm weather—although isolated gusts are possible at the summit of Teide.
What to expect this weekend: new waves of rain and wild temperature swings
On Saturday, the weather front will continue moving east, affecting more regions. Rain will sweep the west, center, and north of the country, while southern and eastern provinces, as well as the Balearics, will remain mostly unaffected. Especially heavy downpours are expected in northern Cáceres and the south of Castilla y León. Winds in the mountains will persist, and temperatures remain stable: in some parts of Cantabria it may reach 20°C, and up to 25°C along the Mediterranean coast.
Sunday will bring a weakening of the front as it moves closer to the Mediterranean. Rainfall will become less intense and more localized, but brief yet heavy showers are possible in the Pyrenees mountains. Across most of the country, temperatures will begin to drop, except in the southeast where Murcia could see highs close to 30°C. In the north and center, maximum temperatures won’t exceed 15°C—a typical autumn scenario.
Start of the week: stabilization and morning fog
Monday is expected to be calmer: cloudiness will persist in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands, and Cantabria. By evening, a new front may arrive, reaching Galicia. Inland regions will experience dense morning fog, which could complicate road conditions. Drivers are advised to be especially cautious during these hours, as fog tends to become thicker and linger longer after rainy days.
The Canary Islands will enjoy a stable weekend: sunny and warm weather is expected, with temperatures in some areas rising above 30 degrees. Overall, Spain’s weather will remain highly contrasting—from heavy rain and wind in the north to summer heat on the islands.
