Weather in Spain once again brought an unpleasant surprise to residents of several regions. An orange alert has been issued in Málaga due to heavy rains and gale-force winds. Catalonia, Valencia, as well as the provinces of Huelva and Cádiz are under a yellow warning. Meteorologists note that some areas of Málaga could see up to 80 liters of rain per square meter in just 12 hours. Winds from the east are intensifying and dangerous waves are expected along the coast.
The situation remains tense in Catalonia. In recent days, the provinces of Barcelona and Girona have seen up to 250 liters of rain per square meter in some locations. Winds are reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour, and waves off the coast of Barcelona are rising as high as 4 meters. Rising water levels in Girona’s rivers, such as the Tordera and Onyar, are a particular concern as they have overflowed their banks. The region is on high alert for possible flooding.
Roads and transportation
Harsh weather conditions have also affected road safety. As of Saturday morning, fifteen roads have been impacted by snow and ice. Eight routes are fully closed, and travel on another seven is only possible with snow chains or winter tires. The restrictions affect not only Andalucía, but also Asturias, Castilla y León, Catalonia, and Navarra.
In other parts of the country, the morning began relatively calmly, but meteorologists warn that cloud cover will increase, especially in the south. The approaching front is expected to bring rain to Extremadura and Andalucía, with thunderstorms and hail possible in some areas. Snowfall continues in the northeastern and southeastern mountains, particularly in the eastern Pyrenees, where the snow cover is rising above 1,400–1,600 meters.
Temperatures and climate
After a period of intense cold, air temperatures have started to rise across almost the entire country. The only exception is the western part of Andalucía, where rain and thunderstorms keep it cool. On Islas Canarias, Saturday was generally calm: only the north of Tenerife may see some light showers, and daytime temperatures are holding at 18–19 degrees.
Weekend forecast
On Sunday, meteorologists expect conditions to become increasingly unstable. The atmospheric front will move south, bringing cloudy skies and precipitation to the southern and eastern regions, the Ebro valley, Ceuta, and Melilla. The heaviest rainfall is expected along the Mediterranean coast and nearby areas. Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia, and the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía could see very heavy and prolonged downpours.
At the same time, the north and northwest of the country, in the cantons of Cantabria and Galicia, are expected to remain relatively calm and sunny on Sunday. However, meteorologists advise residents in all regions to stay alert for forecast updates and take necessary precautions.
