The morning in Vigo started unusually: the city came alive thanks to the Hematofesti festival, dedicated to the memory of Miguel López, better known as El Hematocrítico. His wit and talent once took the internet by storm, and now they’ve inspired a major cultural event uniting 17 venues across the city.
For five days, the festival offers workshops, creative meet-ups, concerts, and theater performances. Organizers have put together a highly varied and engaging program: from drawing and fanzine-making to Japanese Kamishibai theater and a residency for up-and-coming comedians. Special attention is given to children’s literature, since López was not only a popular blogger but also an educator and children’s book author.
Hematofesti brings together both acclaimed stars and emerging artists. Among the guests are musicians, poets, visual artists, and well-known comedians. For young visitors and adults alike, there are 14 free creative workshops, new book launches, music performances, and even a series of animated shorts for schoolchildren. This year, the comedy school stands out, where five young comedians are learning from established masters of the stage.
A celebration of memory and inspiration
The festival’s history began with a trip by López and his friends to a literary event in Sardegna. Inspired by the atmosphere, they decided to create something similar in Galicia. After the unexpected death of El Hematocrítico, his loved ones expanded on the idea, turning it into a large-scale project that now brings together fans of López’s work and all those who value children’s culture and humor every year.
Hematofesti is not just about entertainment—it’s also a way to honor the memory of a man who could speak to children as equals and find humor even in the most challenging topics. Organizers emphasize that the festival reflects López’s worldview and principles, with creativity, respect for childhood, and genuine laughter at its heart.
Awards and New Traditions
As part of the festival, a special award, Lenda do Recreo, is presented. This year, it will go to Teresa Rabal for her contribution to children’s culture and her affinity with the philosophy of El Hematocrítico. Hematofesti has already become a new tradition for Vigo and all of Galicia, uniting generations and genres, inspiring creativity, and reminding us that humor is the best way to understand the world.
