Hundreds of Hortaleza Residents Say Goodbye to Beloved Pharmacist Fausto González

A Heartfelt Evening in Madrid: How a Neighborhood Said Farewell to a Local Legend

A farewell was held in Hortaleza for Fausto González, who spent 16 years as more than just a pharmacist—he was a true friend to his neighbors. Find out why his passing became a significant event for the entire district.

Recently, an event took place in the Madrid district of Hortaleza that struck a chord with every resident. Fausto González, who had worked at the local pharmacy for 16 years, ended his professional career. His departure prompted a spontaneous yet deeply heartfelt farewell, drawing hundreds of people. For many, Fausto was more than just a pharmacist—he was a true friend and advisor, someone people turned to not only for medicine but also for support.

Fausto’s story echoes that of another well-known local pharmacist, Adolfo Ruiz Espiga, who was cherished by the neighborhood over thirty years ago. After his sudden passing at the pharmacy, the entire district was in shock, and thousands came to say goodbye. Since then, Hortaleza has never forgotten the value of someone who does more than dispense medicine, but genuinely cares for each member of the community.

Passing the torch

Salvador San Andrés, one of the district’s longtime residents, recalls that Fausto became Hortaleza’s ‘heir’ to Adolfo. Although they never met in person, they shared a similar way of interacting with people and a sincere commitment to the lives of their neighbors. According to Salvador, Fausto didn’t just do his job—he turned the pharmacy into a place where people could seek help in any situation.

Unlike modern pharmacies, which increasingly focus on selling cosmetics and related products, Fausto always prioritized the medical aspect. He knew each of his regular customers by name, cared about their well-being, and was always willing to listen. He paid special attention to the elderly residents of the neighborhood, for whom his care was truly important.

A personal approach

Eduardo Valero, the concierge of the neighboring building, also played a special role in the life of the pharmacy. Together with Fausto, they became an integral part of the community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. When Fausto was in quarantine, Eduardo helped deliver medicine to those who couldn’t leave their homes. Their partnership became a symbol of mutual assistance and support during difficult times.

The farewell for Fausto came together spontaneously: residents posted notices around the neighborhood so as many people as possible could come and express their gratitude. That evening, more than 150 people gathered outside the pharmacy—much more than expected. Fausto himself was moved to tears, and his friend Eduardo joked that he should drink more water to avoid being dehydrated by his emotions.

The voice of the neighborhood

Among those who came to say goodbye was 83-year-old Pilar Sanz, who did not hide her feelings. She admitted that after Fausto left, she felt orphaned, as now she must explain her problems all over again to new pharmacists who don’t know her history. For many residents, Fausto had become a part of their lives, and his departure is felt as a personal loss.

Fausto himself admits that the decision to leave was not easy. The main reason was his desire to spend more time with his family: his parents, wife, and 13-year-old daughter. Over the years, he realized he had devoted too much time to the pharmacy, while his loved ones took a back seat. Now he hopes to make up for lost time, although he concedes he is still getting used to this new chapter in his life.

A new chapter

Even after leaving the pharmacy, Fausto continues to help his former clients: he responds to letters and offers advice by email. His professionalism and compassion are still in demand, despite the change in his routine. In the Hortaleza district, his name has become synonymous with genuine care and dedication.

In case you didn’t know, Fausto González comes from a family of medical professionals: his great-grandfather, grandfather, and two uncles also devoted their lives to medicine. Fausto chose pharmacy to carry on the family tradition, but he did it his own way—with a focus on personal interaction and support. His pharmacy on Santa Adela street became a ‘house of help’ for many, and Fausto himself—a figure Hortaleza residents will remember for years to come.
