Fire Season 2025: Scale and Specifics
The latest high-risk wildfire season has ended in the province of Almería, bringing serious challenges for local services and residents. During this period, fires affected 2,389 hectares—almost all of it shrubland, with minimal forest damage. Throughout the season, specialists responded to 50 incidents, managing to contain 35 of them at an early stage and preventing flames from spreading over larger areas.
Two major fires, each covering more than 500 hectares, were of particular concern. The first broke out in early May near Huércal de Almería; the second occurred in late August in Lubrín. In both cases, a state of emergency was declared due to threats to people and property. Challenging weather conditions—including strong, shifting winds—significantly complicated the efforts of firefighters and rescue teams.
Weather anomalies and their impact on the situation
The 2025 season was marked by unusual weather: after a wet winter and spring, the region faced two waves of extreme heat. The first came at the end of June into early July, while the second, more intense wave, struck the province in August—becoming the strongest ever recorded. These conditions led to rapid growth of grass and shrubs, creating the perfect environment for wildfires to spread.
As a result, despite all the efforts of emergency services, firefighting proved particularly challenging. Nevertheless, thanks to the coordinated work of firefighters, police, military, and volunteers, most fires were contained at an early stage. Authorities note that residents and visitors to the region have become more proactive in reporting early signs of fire, allowing for a rapid response and minimizing damage.
Emergency response efforts and new measures
During the season, emergency services received over a thousand calls about fires in rural and forested areas. This accounted for about 3.4% of all such reports in Andalucía. The regional police investigated several fire incidents, detaining five suspects and issuing hundreds of reports for violations related to fires and movement in hazardous areas.
The regional authorities continue to update their equipment fleet and strengthen logistical resources for firefighting. Dozens of new fire engines and snow removal vehicles have already been deployed, and modern mobile weather stations are being purchased. In the near future, the fleet will be further expanded with several specialized vehicles and the introduction of heavy machinery for clearing and extinguishing fires.
Investing in safety and future plans
To improve fire-fighting efficiency, the Andalusian government has signed long-term contracts for the leasing and maintenance of aircraft and helicopters with various load capacities. Total investment in upgrading and expanding technical capabilities has exceeded 100 million euros. In the coming years, further expansion of the aircraft fleet is planned, including for year-round patrolling and rescue operations.
Authorities stress that modern technology and upgraded equipment are only part of a comprehensive approach to protecting forests and rural areas. The professionalism of firefighters, coordination between various services, and active public involvement remain crucial. Only through joint efforts can the impact of natural disasters be minimized and the unique natural landscapes of Almería preserved.
