An unusual program has launched in Aranjuez, sparking lively interest among local youth. Authorities have decided not only to remind residents about the dangers of drinking and driving, but also to reward those who choose to stay sober behind the wheel. On the night of November 29 to 30, mobile checkpoints appeared on city streets, offering young drivers an unexpected bonus — the chance to receive a €20 fuel voucher for a clean breathalyzer test.
The idea is simple: anyone could voluntarily take a blood alcohol test. If the device showed 0.0, the participant immediately received a voucher that could be exchanged for gasoline. The initiative proved especially appealing to those who often serve as the group’s designated driver on weekend nights.
Reward Instead of Punishment
Unlike traditional preventive patrols that focus on fines and penalties, this new campaign emphasizes positive motivation. Organizers are confident: when young people see a real benefit in responsible behavior, habits change more quickly. This time, 40 people received their fuel rewards, proving that you can have fun and still stay sober behind the wheel.
The campaign involved not only local police officers, but also specially trained counselors. They discussed the risks of alcohol consumption and explained the importance of choosing a sober driver in a group. This approach allowed for real dialogue and prevention, rather than just a formal document check.
Youth Engagement
City authorities note that such programs are especially effective in areas with vibrant nightlife, where young people often get behind the wheel. In Aranjuez, they decided to focus on trust and respect for individual choices. Instead of threats and bans, they offer support and real rewards.
As part of an agreement with the Federation of Spirits Producers of Spain (Espirituosos España), the city has repeatedly run similar campaigns. In addition to rewarding sober drivers, the program includes training for bar and restaurant staff on responsible customer service, as well as special activities for teenagers and their parents.
Results and Prospects
According to organizers, interest in the campaign is growing every year. Young people eagerly share their experiences on social media, and many admit they now plan ahead to decide who will drive and stay sober. This approach helps shape a new culture of road behavior, where safety becomes a personal choice rather than just a legal requirement.
Authorities in Aranjuez are confident their experience can serve as an example for other cities across the country. New municipalities are already joining the program, and the number of participants continues to rise steadily. In the future, there are plans to expand the list of rewards and make participation even more attractive for young people.
Partnership and Support
A key role in implementing the initiative was played by the cooperation between the municipality and the Federación de Espirituosos. This partnership not only made it possible to set up control points, but also provided informational support and trained specialists to work with young people.
Under the agreement signed in the spring, both parties committed to working together to reduce alcohol-related traffic accidents and promote responsible drinking. Special attention is being given to prevention among minors and to training staff in the hospitality sector.
In case you didn’t know, Espirituosos España is the largest association of spirits producers and distributors in the country. The organization is actively involved in social and educational projects aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm. In cooperation with municipalities and educational institutions, it implements programs to prevent drunk driving, supports initiatives to promote a culture of responsible consumption, and regularly holds training seminars for hospitality workers.
