Isabel Preysler’s Two Biggest Failures: Betrayal and a Mark of Intelligence

Life Lessons from the Queen of Glamour: Isabel Preysler on Betrayal and Learning from Her Mistakes

Isabel Preysler speaks candidly about her setbacks. Her cosmetics business collapsed, and her television career also faltered. She took valuable lessons from these experiences.

Isabel Preysler’s autobiography has become a true sensation, sparking widespread public reaction. The book not only sheds light on previously unknown details of her life, but also touches on many subjects that had long remained behind the scenes. Its publication triggered a wave of discussion and even discontent from some of those mentioned in the book—for instance, the Vargas Llosa family, who were not pleased by the release of the Nobel laureate’s private correspondence. Nevertheless, the memoirs of Miguel Boyer’s widow soared to bestseller status, confidently competing with other high-profile new releases, including recollections about King Juan Carlos I.

In her book, Preysler delivers a remarkably candid look not only at her personal troubles—such as her divorces from Julio Iglesias and Carlos Falcó—but also at the challenges in her marriage to Miguel Boyer, whom she met while he was still married. She does not shy away from discussing setbacks in her children’s private lives either. However, what stands out most is her willingness to talk openly about her own professional missteps. Perhaps the most painful of these was her first and only attempt at business: launching the My Cream cosmetics line. She unveiled this project with great fanfare on one of the country’s most popular TV shows—where she later returned to promote her autobiography. Both appearances delivered record-high ratings for the program.

The mother of Enrique Iglesias admits that the collapse of the project, into which she invested not only her expertise in cosmetology but also significant funds, was a huge disappointment for her. According to her, the failure was due to the distributor not fulfilling their obligations. Another serious setback was her television career. In this regard, her daughter, Tamara Falcó, has been much more successful, firmly establishing her presence on TV screens. Isabel recalls without hesitation her show “Hoy en casa,” which aired in May 1998 but failed to win over viewers.

Preysler notes that she worked with an excellent team, but the content of the program couldn’t compete with Saturday football broadcasts. The key takeaway after six episodes was decisive: she realized she didn’t feel comfortable as a TV host and wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. The ability to acknowledge one’s limitations and weaknesses is not only constructive, but also a sign of intelligence. This very quality has allowed her to remain an iconic figure for decades, focusing on the strengths that made her famous. Despite past setbacks, she recently agreed to film a Christmas documentary project for Disney Plus, a format that perfectly matched what she could bring to the audiovisual world, and she was completely satisfied with the experience.
