Italian pensioner loses entire year’s pension for a single day’s vineyard job in Italy

How an 80-euro fine could suddenly escalate to 24,000 — what’s the catch

A 67-year-old pensioner in Italy tried to earn €80 in one day. For this, he received a €24,000 fine. Find out why the court upheld such a harsh ruling

A scandal has erupted in Italy over a 67-year-old retiree who decided to earn a little extra by picking grapes. The man, already receiving his pension under the ‘Quota 100’ scheme, spent just one day working at a vineyard, hoping to make 80 euros. However, this decision led to unexpectedly harsh consequences for him.

Some time after this side job, the pensioner received a notice from the National Institute for Social Security (INPS). The letter stated he had violated the terms of early retirement, as the ‘Quota 100’ system strictly forbids any paid work. As a result, the man was ordered to return his entire annual pension — amounting to 24,000 euros.

Strict regulations

The ‘Quota 100’ scheme, which was in effect until recently in Italy, allowed people to retire earlier than the official age under certain conditions. However, one of the main requirements was a complete ban on any income-generating work. Even a single day of side work was considered a violation — a fatal mistake for this pensioner.

The man never imagined such a minor earning could lead to such a significant financial loss. His lawyer argues that the punishment is disproportionate to the offense and contradicts the principle of fairness. According to the defense, if any penalty is imposed, it should be limited to returning the 80 euros — not the full annual pension.

Fighting for justice

Disagreeing with the INPS decision, the pensioner took the matter to court. His legal representatives argued that the law does not clearly define the penalty for such a violation. They suggested either limiting the sanction to returning the earned 80 euros or temporarily suspending the pension payments for one month.

However, the court sided with the state body. The ruling stated that waiving the fine could set a dangerous precedent for future cases. As a result, the pensioner will have to return the entire amount received over the year.

Public reaction

The case sparked widespread discussion among Italian pensioners and the general public. Many believe that such laws should be revised to avoid harsh consequences for minor violations. Social media users are actively debating whether it is fair to punish someone who simply tried to improve their financial situation slightly.

It remains unclear whether the pensioner will appeal the court’s decision to higher authorities. However, his case has already fueled discussions about the need to amend Italy’s pension legislation.
