Junts loses ground fight for voters and influence in Catalonia

Internal divisions within Junts threaten the party’s future

Junts faces pressure as Aliança Catalana gains ground. Internal debates about strategy have intensified within the party. This could reshape Catalonia’s political landscape.

The situation surrounding Junts has become one of the most discussed topics in Catalonia. Recent forecasts indicate that the party risks losing a significant share of its support, which could shift the balance of power in the region. According to El Pais, anxiety within Junts increased after the November CEO barometer was published, showing that Aliança Catalana nearly matched them in the number of seats. This scenario could push Junts into a secondary role in future elections.

Internal disagreements

Two paths for Junts

A split has emerged within Junts: some members believe the party must adopt the rhetoric of Aliança Catalana to retain wavering voters. One example was in Manresa, where the party put forward a candidate with far-right views, sparking debate even among supporters. Other leaders, on the contrary, advocate returning to the ideas of the old Convergència and uniting different factions to avoid losing their central position on the political map.

Loss of trust

Risks and challenges

Declining voter loyalty is a worrying sign for Junts. El Pais estimates that only 60% of former supporters are willing to vote for the party again. This opens the door to competitors, especially Aliança Catalana, which already leads in some regions, and PSC, which is actively engaging with the business community. Esquerra Republicana has also increased pressure by using a pragmatic approach and forming new alliances, allowing it to take key local positions from Junts.

Strategic mistakes

Positioning problems

Junts’ attempts to imitate their rivals’ rhetoric are eroding their uniqueness. In Manresa, where a significant part of the population consists of migrants, pushing an anti-immigration agenda has failed to produce the expected results. Moreover, such moves may further dilute the party’s electoral base and erode trust among moderate voters. At the same time, returning to Convergència’s ideas is complicated by the fact that many former supporters have already aligned with other political groups.

Competition intensifies

A fight for survival

Junts finds itself squeezed between three major rivals: Aliança Catalana, PSC, and Esquerra Republicana. Each offers its own strategy and is actively pursuing voters who once supported Junts. In recent months, Esquerra Republicana has initiated several votes of no confidence to remove Junts from control of municipal governments, further complicating the party’s position. Facing this level of competition, Junts must make difficult decisions regarding its future direction and strategy.

In recent years, Catalonia’s political landscape has repeatedly shifted under the influence of new actors and internal disputes within traditional parties. Similar patterns emerged after the arrival of Ciudadanos, when many voters turned away from established parties. By 2023, growing support for Aliança Catalana was already evident in local elections, while PSC strengthened its position through new alliances. Analysts note that these shifts could lead to further fragmentation of the political field and the rise of new, unexpected coalitions.
