In the very heart of Murcia, in Lorca, a grand medieval market will once again take place at the end of November. From the 21st to the 24th, the city’s historic streets and squares will be filled with vibrant colors, the scents of spices, and the sounds of music, transporting locals and visitors back to an era when the destinies of Muslims, Jews, and Christians crossed paths here.
The festivities coincide with the Fiestas de San Clemente, which have long become Lorca’s hallmark. This year, organizers have prepared over a hundred market stalls, offering handmade crafts, traditional food, and live demonstrations by artisans. The main events will unfold across the old town’s streets and squares, from Plaza de España to Juan II Street and San Vicente Avenue.
For several days, the city is transformed into a living stage: performers in historical costumes parade through the streets, fire shows and acrobatic performances light up the night, and mythical creatures join the street processions. Children can enjoy workshops in pottery and blacksmithing, rides, and a mini-zoo with animals, while adults immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of a real medieval festival.
A journey into history and cultural heritage
A special highlight of the program is the opening of the Santa María la Mayor church, built on the site of the former main mosque, welcoming all visitors. Exhibitions at the ciuFRONT museum shed light on the city’s Jewish heritage. These events underscore Lorca’s unique role as a symbol of peaceful coexistence among different peoples and religions.
On Saturday, November 22, a spectacular historical parade will take place along Juan Carlos I Avenue (Juan Carlos I). Participants in the procession will recreate key moments from the city’s past—from the era of Muslim rule to the Christian period. At the same time, the streets will come alive with theatrical performances, dance shows, and puppet theater, while craft workshops invite visitors to try their hand at traditional crafts.
Grand finale: castle battle and a culinary surprise
The festival will conclude on Sunday, November 23, within the walls of the famous Castillo de Lorca. Here, a dramatic reenactment of the fortress’s conquest and the signing of the 1244 capitulation will take place, along with a knightly tournament. After the historical shows, everyone will be treated to a traditional rice dish, prepared as part of a charity event in support of the Red Cross.
This year, special attention is given to the 30th anniversary of the ‘Caminos de Sefarad’ network, which connects cities with Jewish heritage. Organizers say the festival not only preserves historical memory but also turns Lorca into a magnet for tourists and culture lovers. Once again, the city opens its gates to everyone eager to feel the breath of history and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a true medieval celebration.
