Madrid Declares November 10 a Public Holiday: Patron Saint Festival Moved

Why Only Madrid Residents Get Extra Days Off: Everything You Need to Know About the Almudena Day Holiday Shift

In 2025, Madrid will observe November 10 as a non-working day. The change follows the rescheduling of the Almudena festival, which falls on a Sunday. Only city residents will benefit from the extra holiday.

In 2025, residents of Madrid can look forward to a pleasant surprise—an extra day off in early November. City authorities have decided to make Monday, November 10, a public holiday. The reason: the celebration of the city’s patron saint, the Virgen de la Almudena, will be moved to the following Monday, since the actual holiday falls on a Sunday.

This rescheduling means that only Spain’s capital will enjoy a unique long weekend, while in other municipalities of the region this day will remain a regular workday. For many residents, it’s a perfect chance to take a mini-break or spend quality time with family without leaving the city.

Traditionally, the festivities in honor of the Virgen de la Almudena will begin even before the official day off. The city’s cathedral will hold celebratory services, and a festive mass will take place at Plaza de la Almudena. Afterwards, a vibrant procession will wind through the city center, connecting Madrid’s main squares. During these days, Madrid will feature not only religious parades but also musical performances, outdoor concerts, and special programs for children and adults. Special attention will be given to the Patronas concert series, showcasing exclusively female musicians.

Gastronomic traditions will also play a key role: the city’s pastry shops will offer the famous ‘Corona de la Almudena’—a sweet treat prepared exclusively for this celebration. Locals and visitors alike eagerly buy this dessert to mark the special occasion with family at the table.

Other festive dates in Madrid until the end of the year

Madrilenians will have several more official holidays before the end of 2025. In December, they look forward to Constitution Day (December 6, Saturday) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, Monday). And, as always, Christmas will be celebrated on December 25 at the end of the month. This gives residents of the capital several chances for rest and family gatherings in the final weeks of the year.

It’s worth noting that next year, the Day of Almudena falls on a Monday, so there’s no need to move the holiday—long weekends will once again delight city dwellers. For many, this is another reason to plan their vacations and cultural activities in November ahead of time.
