Madrid Metro to Help Develop New Metro Line in Alexandria

La experiencia española llega a nivel internacional: ¿qué le espera al transporte egipcio?

Madrid Metro is extending its influence beyond Spain: specialists from the capital’s transit system will develop an operational plan for Alexandria’s future metro. The project includes 20 stations, nearly 21 kilometers of track, and the introduction of advanced management and maintenance standards.

The Madrid Metro continues to strengthen its position on the global stage. In 2025, specialists from the Spanish capital will begin developing an operational plan for a future metro line in Alexandria—one of the largest cities in Egypt and the entire Mediterranean region.

The agreement between the government of the Autonomous Community of Madrid and the Egyptian authorities provides for the creation of a comprehensive operational scheme for the new transport system. The Spanish company Sener, already involved in the construction of the first phase, will work together with Madrid experts. Around 50,000 euros have been allocated for the project, and the planning phase will take five months.

The future Alexandria metro line will link the historic city center with residential districts in the northeast. The route will stretch nearly 21 kilometers and include 20 stations. Most of the line will be elevated, while the southwestern section will be at ground level, partially following the route of the old tramway.

Madrid specialists face the challenge of adapting proven solutions to the dense urban landscape of Alexandria. The plan will include recommendations for optimizing train intervals, organizing staff operations, and maintaining high reliability standards. Special attention will be given to integrating the new line with the existing urban infrastructure and accommodating projected passenger demand.

Experts from Madrid will also help implement modern standards of energy efficiency and sustainable development, which is especially important for a rapidly growing metropolis. As a result, Alexandria will acquire a transport system capable of handling high demand and meeting international quality-of-service standards.

This project is not the only example of international cooperation involving the Madrid Metro. In recent years, Spanish specialists have advised colleagues in Peru, where they take part in the development of metro lines in Lima, as well as in India, where they help optimize urban freight transport. In addition, Madrid professionals are involved in upgrading signaling systems on Lisbon Metro lines, where a modern train control system is being introduced.

In 2024–2025, delegations from 17 countries visited the Madrid Metro, including representatives from Chile, Colombia, Denmark, the US, and France. They are interested in Madrid’s experience in management, innovation, and the adoption of new technologies.

By expanding the reach of its projects, the Madrid Metro reaffirms its status as one of Europe’s most efficient and technologically advanced transport operators. The new phase of cooperation with Alexandria further strengthens the Spanish capital’s position as an international expert in urban transport.
