In early December, the Barcelona suburb of Castelldefels will once again come alive with medieval traditions. From December 5 to 8, the town’s ancient streets will be filled with music, laughter, and the clatter of knightly armor. The twelfth Castrum Fidelis festival promises to be a true celebration for the whole family. Organizers have prepared a packed program ranging from historical reenactments to spectacular tournaments and artisan workshops.
During these days, the city center transforms into a backdrop straight out of a bygone era. At every turn, you’ll encounter performers, musicians, jugglers, and warriors in full regalia. The atmosphere transports visitors back several centuries. Children especially look forward to this event, as the festival’s main attraction is staged just for them: a grand knight tournament featuring real duels, horses, and gleaming armor.
Market and crafts
An expansive market will line the streets, where artisans display goods made of glass, leather, wood, and metal. Here, visitors can not only purchase souvenirs but also watch blacksmiths, glassblowers, and leatherworkers in action. For the curious, there will be workshops in archery and even a small school for young knights. In the historical camp, antique weapons are showcased, and anyone can try on armor or step into the shoes of a medieval craftsman.
The fair will run daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. During this time, the square by the castle and church will host theatrical performances, street concerts, and fire shows. Guests can enjoy non-stop entertainment, parades, and performances by artists that will keep both adults and children engaged.
Tournaments and Entertainment
The festival’s main event—knightly tournaments—will take place in Parc de la Muntanyeta. Spectacular battles are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at noon and 4 p.m., and on Monday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Warriors in full armor will clash in the arena, giving spectators a true taste of medieval combat. In addition to the tournaments, the program includes acrobatic shows, fire performances, and traditional Catalan dances.
Children will have their own areas with creative workshops, theatrical productions, and interactive games. Most events are free, making the festival especially appealing for families with kids.
How to Get There
Castelldefels is just half an hour from Barcelona. You can get here by car via the C-32 or C-31 highways—there are several parking lots near the city center. Commuter trains R2 and R2 Sud, as well as buses departing from Plaça d’Espanya, are also convenient. With excellent transportation links, the festival is a great option for a hassle-free family outing.
Catalan Traditions
The Castrum Fidelis festival takes place alongside the winter city festival, Festa Major d’Hivern. During these days in Castelldefels, you can witness performances by the famous “castellers”—the human tower builders—and join in traditional sardana dances. The program features free concerts, street parades, and a wide range of activities for all ages. The festive atmosphere, historical settings, and variety of events make this festival one of the most vibrant winter celebrations in Catalonia.
