The Medieval Market Returns to Vic: A Perfect Family Getaway Near Barcelona

Forget Mont Blanc — December in Vic Heats Up with Dragons, Knights, and Fiery Shows Awaiting Visitors

This December, Vic will once again transform into a medieval town. With over 300 stalls, knight tournaments, and fiery performances, discover why this event is a must-visit for the whole family.

In early December, the Catalan city of Vic undergoes a complete transformation for three days. The narrow streets of the historic center fill with the sound of drums, the aroma of grilled meat, and the cries of vendors. One of Spain’s most famous medieval markets once again opens its doors here, drawing thousands of visitors from across the country each year.

From December 6 to 8, Vic becomes an open-air stage. Over 300 stalls, craft workshops, street performers, and musicians recreate the true spirit of the Middle Ages. Admission is free, and the vibrant program ensures both adults and children will have plenty to enjoy.

A journey to the era of knights and dragons

Organizers promise that this year’s event will feature not only the traditional artisan rows, but also new interactive zones. The city streets will host knightly tournaments, theatrical parades with dragons and giant mythical creatures, and workshops in archery and fencing. Separate areas with puppet shows and fairy-tale storytelling have been prepared for the youngest visitors.

Throughout all three days, the city’s main squares will feature fire shows, acrobatic performances, and music concerts. Special attention will be given to historical reenactments: visitors can see how artisans lived, what merchants traded, and how townspeople entertained themselves in the medieval period.

How to get there, and what’s new in 2025

Despite temporary disruptions to rail service, getting to Vic from Barcelona remains easy. Special shuttle buses and convenient routes for drivers have been arranged for visitors. This year, the market is celebrating its 29th anniversary and, for the first time, has received the B GREENLY eco-certificate, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Organizers are actively implementing eco-friendly solutions: waste sorting, the use of biodegradable tableware, and support for local producers. All this makes the event not just spectacular, but also environmentally responsible.

A program for the whole family

Every day of the festival is scheduled down to the minute. In the morning, visitors are greeted by street musicians and dancers; during the day, there are knightly duels and workshops, and in the evening—spectacular fire shows and light displays set against ancient walls. The processions with dragons and giant puppets are especially popular, delighting not only children but adults as well.

The Vic Market is more than just a fair; it’s a true journey through time. Here, you can sample dishes prepared according to ancient recipes, purchase unique handmade crafts, and feel like the hero of a medieval tale. For many families, coming here at the start of December has become a cherished tradition—an opportunity to catch the holiday spirit and discover something new.

If you’re looking for an original way to spend a weekend near Barcelona, make sure to add Vic to your itinerary. There’s something here for everyone: from historical reenactments to modern eco-initiatives. Don’t miss the chance to be part of one of Catalonia’s most vibrant winter events!
