On the evening of November 28, the center of Murcia was filled with festive lights and music as a massive Christmas tree was lit up in Plaza Circular. The event marked the final touch in the city’s preparations for the winter holidays. The atmosphere was made even more special by the presence of renowned actor Richard Gere, who attended the ceremony as an honorary guest.

Murcia’s holiday lights are traditionally considered among the brightest in the region. This year, organizers focused on family values and the city’s history: a heart and crown were placed at the top of the tree, while the slogan “1200 años juntos” adorned the festive banner. Locals and tourists gathered in the square long before the start to make sure they didn’t miss a moment.

A holiday for children and adults: the evening’s program

The evening’s main stars were children supported by the Fundación Aladina charity. Together with Richard Gere, they were the first to light up the tree. All the little guests received glowing mini-trees so everyone could feel part of the big celebration.

Before the ceremony began, from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m., the popular children’s character Drilo el Cocodrilo appeared on stage. His show drew many families, and young children greeted their beloved hero with delight. Afterward, the main event began — the lighting of the tree, accompanied by a pyrotechnic and musical display.

Light installations and special effects

This year, organizers amazed visitors with an unusual light show: 65 powerful spotlights projected the image of a Christmas tree in the sky, visible even two kilometers away from the square. Impressive special effects and music made the tree-lighting moment truly unforgettable.

The festivities did not end after just one evening. In December, the themed park Navilandia will open on the FICA grounds, and the artisan market with the ‘Clockmaker’s Tale’ video mapping will return to Glorieta Square. Residents can look forward to concerts, a visit from Santa Claus, the traditional nativity scene, and a wide variety of family-friendly activities.

Traffic changes and free public transport

Due to the large-scale event, city authorities imposed temporary restrictions on traffic. Sections of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue and avenida Constitución, as well as several approaches to Plaza Circular, were blocked off. For visitors’ convenience, buses and trams were free of charge throughout the evening, and parking was complimentary at Atocha, Loaysa, Fuenteblanca, and Justicia lots.

The traffic management measures helped prevent congestion and ensured the safety of attendees. City services informed residents in advance about road closures and additional transport options.

Murcia gears up for a busy December

The festive lighting of the Christmas tree was just the beginning of a series of winter events in Murcia. Authorities promise that in December, the city will delight residents and visitors with new surprises, dazzling lights, and a truly magical atmosphere. This year, Murcia has once again confirmed its status as one of the most welcoming and festive cities in Spain.
