A major operation in Nules has raised alarm across Spain: in this small Castellón town, police discovered and rescued more than a hundred foreign nationals held in cramped, unsanitary conditions. The incident highlights the acute problem of illegal labor exploitation and human trafficking in a country where agriculture and seasonal work often attract migrants.
According to El Pais, early in the morning Civil Guard officers carried out a series of searches in several homes belonging to the alleged ringleader of the criminal operation. Several people were arrested during the raid, including the main suspect, who was led out of his apartment in handcuffs along with his wife. Dozens of agents took part in the operation, and helicopters hovered over the town, causing concern among local residents.
Most of those freed were men from Pakistan who worked in the fields and lived in conditions far from humane. In one of the seven apartments where victims were found, there was no electricity or running water, and 25 people slept on the floor of a two-story house. Neighbors reported that the owner had illegally connected electricity to the building to provide minimal living conditions.
The exploitation scheme
As reported by El Pais, the organizer of the network operated like an illegal employment agency, offering compatriots jobs and housing but charging for every service. People paid not only for rent, but also for transportation to work, equipment for harvesting, and even for the chance to be registered at an address. As a result, migrants’ earnings were reduced to a minimum, and some never received the promised housing.
One former worker said he was paid only 20 euros for a full day in the fields, from which 6 euros were deducted for transport. In addition, people were charged a deposit of 1,000 euros for the promised housing, which was never provided. Witnesses said the scheme’s organizer did not work himself but made significant profits by exploiting others.
After being freed, the victims were temporarily housed at a site next to a medical center, where they received first aid and social support. People waited their turn for examination, sitting quietly with their belongings in plastic bags. All of them had worked for the detainee, who effectively kept them in isolation.
Reaction and consequences
The operation in Nules sparked widespread public attention. Local residents noted that helicopters were flying so low it seemed they might brush the rooftops. Forensic experts and a mobile command center were on site, and the area was cordoned off by police. Authorities emphasize that the investigation is ongoing, and details are not being disclosed yet due to the confidentiality of the inquiry.
The incident in Castellón is reminiscent of other cases involving migrant rights violations and illegal employment. For example, new security measures were recently introduced in Cartagena to monitor luggage on cruise ships, also as part of increased checks on illegal activity in ports (details on new port control technologies).
According to russpain.com, such operations are becoming more common amid a growing number of migrants seeking work in Spain. Authorities have stepped up inspections in agricultural regions, where cases of labor exploitation are most frequently reported. However, despite tougher measures, the problem remains relevant and new exploitation schemes continue to appear.
Context and similar cases
In recent years, Spain has faced a rise in cases related to human trafficking and illegal employment of migrants. In 2025, a network holding dozens of workers in similar conditions was uncovered in Andalucía. At the time, authorities also carried out a major operation involving special forces and offered temporary accommodation to the victims in dedicated centers. In the Valencian Community and Murcia, cases are regularly uncovered where migrants are used for seasonal work without proper documentation or decent living conditions. These developments highlight the need for continuous monitoring and reforms in labor migration.
