It’s Not Puertollano: The Largest City in Ciudad Real Revealed

This city is five times larger than Madrid, but few have heard of it. Discovering the hidden gem of Castilla-La Mancha

Ciudad Real has a vast city whose size is astonishing—it’s five times larger than Madrid, yet its population is surprisingly small. Discover what makes this unique place special and uncover its secrets.

When it comes to the largest settlements in the province of Ciudad Real, industrial centers like Puertollano or the agricultural giant Tomelloso immediately come to mind. However, the truly enormous municipality is in fact another one, whose vast territory would surprise even the most seasoned geographer. We are talking about Almodóvar del Campo, which is five times larger than the capital of Spain. This makes it not only the largest in Castilla-La Mancha, but also puts it fifth in the national ranking, behind Cáceres, Lorca, Badajoz, and Córdoba.

A Giant on the Map of La Mancha

The territory of Almodóvar del Campo stretches across an impressive 1,208 square kilometers. Such colossal size is a legacy of its distant past. In the Middle Ages and the Modern era, when these lands were under the control of military orders and nobility, its borders were gradually expanded by adding numerous villages and vast farmland. Historically low population density has helped these ancient boundaries remain largely unchanged to this day, turning the municipality into a true land giant.

Geographically, Almodóvar del Campo is located in the southwest of the province of Ciudad Real. It is nestled at the foot of the Sierra Madrona mountain range, in close proximity to the renowned Valle de Alcudia Natural Park. The municipality stretches nearly 60 kilometers from east to west, offering an incredible variety of landscapes within its borders.

Between history and nature

Almodóvar del Campo impresses not only with its vast size but also with its rich heritage. Here, history, culture, and nature intertwine, offering visitors and locals a wealth of remarkable discoveries. One of its main jewels is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. This magnificent 16th-century temple, built in the Gothic-Mudejar style and designated a site of cultural interest, stands out for its monumental tower and its lavish main altar.

Another landmark is the house where San Juan de Ávila, venerated as a Doctor of the Church and the patron of Spanish clergy, was born. Today, this building has been turned into a museum and is an important pilgrimage center. Nature enthusiasts will find a true treasure in the Valle de Alcudia and Sierra Madrona Natural Park—one of the largest protected areas in Castilla-La Mancha, perfect for hiking, wildlife watching, and enjoying unique landscapes. The heart of local life remains the central Plaza Mayor, preserving the authentic spirit of La Mancha with its historic buildings, shops, and cozy café terraces.

The Pace of Life in Rural Spain

Life in Almodóvar del Campo is a choice in favor of tranquility and the charm of a traditional Spanish town. Its streets have retained their historic look, with whitewashed houses and inner courtyards blooming with flowers. The surrounding nature offers endless opportunities for outdoor walks and active recreation. Here, you can truly escape the rush of big cities and enjoy a slower, more peaceful rhythm of life.

Yet the city cannot be described as isolated from civilization. Puertollano, with its AVE high-speed train station, is just a ten-minute drive away, and the provincial capital Ciudad Real can be reached in about half an hour. This prime location allows residents to enjoy a secluded life in harmony with nature while still having access to all the conveniences of modern urban living.

The Paradox of Size and Population

Despite its vast territory, Almodóvar del Campo’s demographic figures are striking. According to the latest 2024 data, the municipality is home to only about 5,700 people. This results in an incredibly low population density—less than five residents per square kilometer. The contrast is especially evident when compared to other major cities in the province.

Puertollano, for instance, is a major industrial hub, while Tomelloso is renowned for its agriculture and winemaking, both factors contributing to their large populations. Other densely populated towns include Valdepeñas, Alcázar de San Juan, and Manzanares. In terms of land area, aside from Almodóvar del Campo, significant territories are also claimed by Alcázar de San Juan and Retuerta del Bullaque, whose lands are primarily dedicated to farmland and nature reserves.
