One of the largest police operations in recent years has concluded in Catalonia, targeting repeat offenders with extensive criminal records. As a result of coordinated actions by various police units in Barcelona and several neighboring cities, more than 70 people have been detained, collectively linked to 577 registered offenses.
The operation kicked off last night, covering not only the regional capital but also major municipalities such as Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Adrià de Besòs, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Esplugues, and El Prat. Police were also present at Josep Tarradellas Airport and in the city of Figueres in the province of Girona.
During the operation, police detained 70 individuals, each with an extensive record of violations. Another 34 people are now under investigation—their combined histories account for 197 incidents. Additionally, two stolen vehicles were returned to their owners, and six electric scooters, reportedly used in criminal activities, were confiscated.
Crackdown on repeat offenders
This operation marked the tenth of its kind under a special program aimed at preventing new offenses by individuals who have repeatedly come to the attention of law enforcement. Authorities in Catalonia note that such measures not only allow for the detention of offenders but also help curb the further spread of crime in the region.
Special attention was paid to areas with a high rate of offenses, including the well-known La Mina district in Sant Adrià de Besòs. Here, as in other locations, police carried out checks, detentions, and seizures of property linked to illegal activities.
Results and consequences
During the operation, 74 reports were issued for traffic violations and 122 administrative cases were opened for possession of drugs and weapons. Additionally, 39 establishments were fined for various regulatory breaches. The authorities emphasize that these actions are aimed at creating a safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
Despite the considerable scope of the operation, police continue to finalize the results. Updated data on the number of arrests and offenses detected is expected to be released in the coming days. Meanwhile, residents of Barcelona and the surrounding areas have noted a marked increase in police presence on the streets and in public spaces.
Safety first
The recent operation once again demonstrated the determination of the Catalan authorities to combat crime and protect the interests of law-abiding citizens. Increased oversight, regular raids, and coordinated efforts between various police departments enable them to respond effectively to emerging challenges and maintain order in one of Spain’s most densely populated regions.
Similar operations are expected to continue in the near future to minimize risks for the public and boost confidence in law enforcement. Catalans hope that these measures will help make their cities safer and more comfortable places to live.
