At the beginning of this year, everything changed for a 30-year-old mother from Palma. A routine call from her own mother asking about her family status became the starting point for a series of troubles. Confident that her personal data was secure, she suddenly discovered strange incidents linked to her name.
It turned out that back in August of the previous year, she had lost her identification document but didn’t think much of it at the time. Before a trip to Tarragona, she obtained a new one, assuming the old one had simply been misplaced. However, months later, it emerged that her ID hadn’t just disappeared — it had been stolen and used for fraud.
While checking her place of residence registration, she discovered she was no longer listed at her Palma address. This led to her being denied social benefits and other services. Later, it was revealed that phone contracts had been opened and even an expensive smartphone purchased in her name. Moreover, she had been registered in the municipality of Sant Boi de Llobregat at two different addresses.
The most shocking news came from the police: two civil marriages with Moroccan citizens had been registered in her name. One of them coincided with the period when she was in Tarragona with her family. She is now officially married to two strangers and has to wait for a court decision to annul these fraudulent unions.
The problems did not end there. The woman was unable to restore her registration in Palma and lost historical residency records needed to access assistance. Despite filing a complaint, she managed to cancel only part of the debts related to the fraud, but has not yet succeeded in undoing the fictitious marriages or regaining her previous status. She also faced difficulties obtaining a large family certificate, which may affect her access to future benefits.
Of particular concern is the fact that the woman who stole her ID still appears at the school where her children study. The victim is seeking a court-issued restraining order against this person. The original ID, valid until 2028, has not been found.
