Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the leader of the Left Republican party of Catalonia (ERC), Oriol Junqueras, will hold talks at the very beginning of 2026. The main goal is to discuss whether the current parliament can continue to function amid growing pressure and new scandals related to allegations of corruption and misconduct within the ruling party.
The anticipation for this meeting arose after a phone conversation between Sánchez and Junqueras that took place over the weekend. The urgent contact was prompted by recent news reports that could threaten the stability of the current coalition. In particular, there are ongoing investigations involving members of the PSOE, as well as the implementation of agreements previously reached between the Socialists and Catalan Republicans.
According to ERC spokesperson Isaac Albert, both sides have agreed on the need for a face-to-face meeting. Sánchez is busy with work at the European Council in the coming days, and with the Christmas holidays approaching, the talks are postponed until the start of next year.
