At the start of the week, the Middle East returned to the forefront of Spain’s political agenda. Pedro Sánchez, head of the Spanish government, publicly expressed support for Donald Trump’s proposal, which introduces a new plan to end the conflict in Gaza. Sánchez stated that Spain welcomes any steps that can help put an end to the suffering of civilians in the region.
The essence of the American initiative lies in establishing a temporary administration in the Gaza Strip. The plan envisions that Trump himself would oversee this transitional period, while former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair would join the process as an advisor. Key points include demilitarizing the territory and opening discussions on the future Palestinian state.
The Spanish leader stressed that it is especially important now to achieve an immediate end to violence, secure the release of all detainees, and open access to humanitarian aid for the civilian population. According to Sánchez, the only real path to stability is the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine within the framework of two states.
It is worth recalling that Spain was among the first in Europe to officially recognize Palestine in May 2024, acting in coordination with Ireland and Norway. At that time, Sánchez stated that Madrid would not accept any borders other than those established before 1967, unless otherwise agreed by the parties. Nearly a year later, the head of the Spanish government noted that other countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, had joined this position by supporting the UN resolution.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement supporting the American plan and calling on all parties to cease hostilities. The ministry emphasizes the need for a lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to end the prolonged suffering of Gaza’s residents.
Madrid is not alone in supporting Trump’s initiative. Leaders of France and the United Kingdom have also endorsed efforts to end the conflict. Emmanuel Macron expressed hope that Israel would accept the proposed terms, while Hamas would immediately release all hostages. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that London fully supports efforts to end the fighting and provide urgent aid to Gaza’s residents.
