Pedro Sánchez to Address Congress Amid Fresh Corruption Allegations

Government in Limbo: Sánchez Defends His Reputation as Opposition Calls for Elections

The Prime Minister of Spain faces a tense debate in parliament following accusations of involvement in corruption schemes. The opposition is calling for early elections and intensifying its pressure.

In the coming days, Spain’s political scene will once again be in the spotlight: Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is set to address Congress to respond to allegations of corruption within his inner circle. Just two weeks ago, he was questioned in the Senate over a case that implicates not only his party but also family members. Now, he faces an even tougher challenge—a public debate in the lower house of parliament, initiated by the opposition.

The parliamentary opposition, primarily the Partido Popular (PP), is using its numerical advantage to establish investigative committees into any suspicious dealings. This time, they are demanding that Sánchez explain possible illegal financial operations within the Socialist Party (PSOE), as well as the alleged use of cash to fund senior officials. The prime minister firmly denies all accusations, insisting on the integrity of his family and colleagues.

Political stakes and opposition pressure

The situation is further complicated by the opposition, which not only accuses Sánchez but also demands immediate new elections. After Junts withdrew their support from the government, Sánchez’s position became even more precarious. The People’s Party and the far-right Vox insist on a change of power, claiming that only their alliance can bring stability to the country. Meanwhile, Sánchez sticks to his usual strategy, warning voters about the dangers of right-wing and far-right forces coming to power and reminding them of the consequences of their coalitions in the regions.

Internal party conflicts and tough negotiations in Valencia have only added fuel to the fire. Vox, which supports PP, is putting forward hardline demands on migration and environmental issues, sparking discontent even among its allies. If no compromise is reached in the coming days, the region could be on the brink of snap elections. This creates a highly unfavorable backdrop for the upcoming campaign in Extremadura, where local leaders are also seeking to distance themselves from far-right partners.

The role of nationalists and the future of coalitions

This time, special attention is focused on the positions of Catalan and Basque nationalists. Junts has officially announced it is breaking ties with the government, but in Madrid, there is confidence that the Catalans will still be open to dialogue on several key bills. Issues related to social policy, transportation, and support for patients remain on the agenda and require joint solutions. Meanwhile, Basque nationalists are in no hurry to draw final conclusions, keeping their options open.

In the coming weeks, it will become clear whether Sánchez can maintain control over the situation or whether opposition pressure and divisions within the coalition will lead to early elections. In any case, the political battle promises to be intense, and the outcome is unpredictable.
