In Spain, thousands of women who have dedicated their lives to their families and homes face the question: what kind of pension can they expect if they have no official work experience? The state provides a special non-contributory old age pension for such cases, designed for people over 65 with low income and confirmed residency in the country.
Who is eligible for this benefit
The non-contributory pension is intended for those who were unable to accumulate the minimum contribution period required for a regular pension. This measure is especially relevant for housewives who spent most of their lives caring for children, elderly relatives, and managing the household, but did not have the opportunity to work officially or make contributions to the Seguridad Social system.
According to Imserso, in 2026 the full non-contributory pension amounts to €8,803.20 per year, paid in 14 installments — this is €628.80 per month. However, the sum may be reduced if the applicant or their family members have other sources of income, or if several recipients of such a pension live in the same household.
Basic requirements
To receive this benefit, several conditions must be met. First, age — at least 65 at the time of application. Second, legal residency in Spain as well as proof that over the past years, the person has lived in the country for at least 10 years after the age of 16, with two of those years immediately preceding the pension application. Third, income level: the pension is granted only if personal funds are lacking, and in some cases, the income of the entire family is considered.
It is important to understand that this measure is not an automatic compensation for housework. The decision to grant the benefit is made only if all conditions are met simultaneously — age, residence, and financial vulnerability.
Amount and payment specifics
The payment amount is individual. If the applicant has additional income or lives with other relatives, the sum may be reduced. The minimum guaranteed amount is €2,200.80 per year (€157.20 per month), even if the family’s income is above the threshold. If there are several recipients of the non-contributory pension in one household, the payments for each person are reduced.
For those who do have official work history, another route is possible. If a woman has worked and accrued at least 15 years of social security contributions, two of which must be within the last 15 years before retirement, she may qualify for a contributory pension. In this case, the payment is usually higher, and the retirement age depends on total work history, ranging from 65 to 67 years.
Application procedure
Applications for the non-contributory pension are accepted by the social protection authorities of the autonomous communities, as well as by Imserso branches and certain offices of the Seguridad Social. Special forms are provided for the application, and decisions are made at the regional level.
Issues of social support and pensions regularly draw public attention in Spain. For example, government measures related to other social payments were recently discussed, which is reflected in a report on the authorities’ response to controversial initiatives in the social sphere — more details can be found in analysis by the RUSSPAIN editorial team.
