Spain has announced large-scale financial support for Ukraine, allocating €817 million for defense needs and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. This amount includes €615 million previously agreed upon and an additional €202 million designated for new initiatives and projects.
A significant portion of the funds will go towards the supply of modern military equipment, including air defense systems, radars, and anti-drone technologies. About €300 million will be spent on acquiring the latest defense complexes, while another €100 million will be used to participate in NATO’s program to purchase American air defense systems. In addition, Spain will invest €215 million through the European SAFE fund to support the production of high-tech protective equipment, much of which is being developed by Spanish companies.
The new €202 million is intended to finance Ukraine’s reconstruction projects. These funds will be distributed through a special structure established to coordinate rebuilding efforts. In particular, there are plans to restore the heating system in the city of Sammar, which will provide heat to more than 28,000 residents. Spanish companies are also expected to gain direct access to tenders for rebuilding energy, transportation, and water supply systems in the affected regions.
During the Ukrainian president’s visit to Madrid, a meeting was held with representatives of leading Spanish defense companies. The discussion focused on prospects for joint production of high-precision weaponry and the supply of long-range radars manufactured in Spain. Participants included companies such as Indra Group, Arquimea, GMV, Instalaza, among others, all of which have earned reputations on the international defense technology market.
As part of the visit, the Ukrainian delegation toured the museum of contemporary art, paying special attention to the painting ‘Guernica’—a symbol of wartime tragedy. The Ukrainian leader drew parallels between the events in his country and Spanish history, expressing gratitude for comprehensive support—including diplomatic, financial, and military aid—as well as assistance with Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.
