In early September, a flotilla of about ten ships from various countries approached the coast of Tunisia. One of the vessels carries well-known Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. The main goal of the mission is to try to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian aid to residents facing a dire situation.
Despite the tensions in the region, the North Atlantic Alliance declined to take responsibility for the security of the convoy. NATO representatives stated that they are not participating in the operation and do not plan to intervene. However, the alliance noted that it is closely monitoring the situation and supports efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians.
The responsibility for the safety of the ships heading toward Gaza now rests with Italy and Spain. These two countries sent their naval vessels to escort the flotilla and protect their citizens on board. The Italian Minister of Defense previously announced the deployment of two navy ships to ensure the safety of Italian citizens.
Any incidents involving the Israeli military are now entirely the responsibility of the authorities in Italy and Spain. NATO has distanced itself from the mission, limiting its involvement to diplomatic statements and expressing concern about the Middle East situation. Meanwhile, the flotilla continues its journey despite the risks and political tensions surrounding the Gaza Strip.
