The weather in Spain is about to deliver an unpleasant surprise: in the coming days, most of the country will experience a noticeable drop in temperatures along with heavy rainfall. Atmospheric systems arriving from the Atlantic have already started to change the usual climate, bringing gray clouds, gusty winds, and rain, which in some areas could be intense.
The temperature drop will be especially noticeable in the northern and central regions. In cities located on higher ground, such as Burgos, Soria, and Segovia, nighttime temperatures will approach winter levels—down to 3–5 degrees in some spots. Vitoria is also expecting a chilly night, and other parts of Castilla y León will see similar conditions. Although widespread frost is not anticipated yet, nights and early mornings will become truly cold.
The southern and Mediterranean regions remain somewhat warmer for now. In Málaga, Córdoba, Murcia, and Granada, daytime temperatures can still reach up to 30 degrees, but nights are becoming cooler, signaling the start of a more unsettled autumn. Nevertheless, changes are on the horizon here as well.
In the north, in Asturias and Cantabria, meteorologists highlight a special risk zone: heavy downpours are expected here, which could lead to significant water accumulation in a short period. Thunderstorms with intense rain and lightning are also possible in the northeastern regions and on the Balearic Islands, especially in the morning hours. In other parts of the east, precipitation will be less intense, but scattered showers are still possible.
Winds will strengthen almost everywhere. In the Ebro Valley, especially in its lower part, strong gusts are expected, and in the Empordà region, a powerful tramontana wind will blow. The Cantabrian coast will not escape the winds either, further intensifying the feeling of cold. The Canary Islands will continue to be influenced by trade winds, which will be especially noticeable on some of the islands.
Meteorologists note that such weather changes are quite typical for this time of year. In the coming weeks, the contrasts between the north and south of the country will become even more pronounced: the north is already entering autumn chill, while the south is still holding on to the remnants of summer. In the near future, nights will become even colder, and rains may spread to new regions, including the center and east of the country. In some cases, repeated thunderstorms are not ruled out.
Special attention is being paid to three areas: the northern coast with its prolonged rains; the northeast and the Balearic Islands, where thunderstorms are possible; and the northern part of the central plateau, where temperatures will drop below 5 degrees. Residents of these regions should be prepared for changes and keep an eye on forecast updates.
