Spain Orders Mandatory Closure of All Poultry Farms Over Bird Flu Threat

Spain tightens health measures: new rules for farmers and poultry owners

Spanish authorities have tightened sanitary measures for all poultry farms. The new restrictions affect even organic producers and private owners. Find out which exceptions apply and how farmers’ lives are about to change.

The Spanish government has announced the introduction of strict containment measures for poultry across the country. Starting now, all farms where chickens, ducks, or geese are raised outdoors must move their flocks into enclosed spaces. This decision comes amid growing concerns over the spread of avian influenza, which has intensified across Europe in recent weeks.

The new rules apply not only to large producers, but also to small-scale private farms and those specializing in organic products. Even people who keep birds solely for personal use, or sell eggs and meat directly to customers, must now comply with the new regulations. Exceptions are possible, but only if strict sanitary standards and additional safety measures are followed.

Authorities explain that the risk of the virus entering Spain has increased due to a rise in outbreaks in neighboring countries and the active migration of wild birds. Regions with numerous bodies of water are considered particularly vulnerable, as large flocks of migratory birds have gathered there. Falling temperatures also help the virus survive in the environment, raising the risk of infection among domestic poultry.

Restrictions for all: What will change on poultry farms

Under the new regulations, it is forbidden to keep chickens, ducks, geese, and other poultry in open areas. If moving the birds to enclosed spaces is not possible, special nets or other barriers must be used to prevent contact with wild birds. Feeding and watering are now only allowed inside protected premises or specially equipped shelters.

Particular attention is paid to water sources: open reservoirs that wild birds can access are now banned. If necessary, the water must be additionally purified to minimize the risk of infection. There is also a ban on keeping geese and ducks together with other types of domestic birds.

Mass events and markets banned

Temporary restrictions have also affected exhibitions, fairs, and other events where birds from different owners are gathered. For the next month, any mass gatherings of domestic and ornamental birds are prohibited to minimize the risk of the virus spreading between farms.

Since July, over a hundred cases of bird flu have been reported at poultry farms across Europe, with 14 cases identified among domestic birds in Spain and dozens more among wild birds. Half of the Spanish outbreaks occurred in the region of Castilla y León. Authorities stress that the new measures are a necessary response to the current epidemiological situation and are vital to protect both poultry farmers and consumers.

What poultry owners need to do

If it is impossible to fully isolate the birds, regional authorities may permit outdoor keeping, but only if protective nets are installed and all contact with wild birds is completely prevented. In this case, feed and water must be placed where wild animals cannot access them. Violations of these new rules may result in fines and other administrative penalties.

In the coming weeks, farmers and household owners must adapt their operations to meet the new requirements. The restrictions are expected to remain in effect until the epidemiological situation stabilizes and the risk of virus spread decreases.
