Spain prepares emergency measures as conflict with Iran threatens economy

Spanish authorities rule out military intervention, pledge strong measures to safeguard citizens

The Spanish government has ruled out military involvement in the conflict with Iran. Officials have promised steps to protect both the economy and citizens. These measures may impact prices and the housing market.

The potential escalation of the situation around Iran has sparked concern among Spaniards due to the risk of rising prices and increased pressure on household budgets. The country’s authorities have already announced their readiness to take action to minimize the economic impact and prevent a repeat of previous years’ scenarios. The primary focus is on protecting citizens’ interests and preventing surges in energy prices and rents.

Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun, speaking in Málaga, emphasized that Spain will not support military action against Iran without international legitimacy. According to him, the use of the Rota and Morón military bases for such operations is out of the question, as it would violate current agreements with the United States. This position demonstrates the country’s commitment to the principles of international law and its refusal to participate in conflicts not sanctioned by the global community.

Political disagreements

During his speech, the minister drew attention to the disagreements between the government and the opposition. He recalled the positions of Partido Popular and Vox, which had previously supported military initiatives, and expressed concern over attempts to return the country to policies reminiscent of 2003 events. Special attention was given to the role of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who, according to the minister, is again raising issues related to Spain’s past involvement in military conflicts. In this context, it is worth noting that the formation of alliances between Partido Popular and Vox has already been discussed in other regions, as was the case after the elections in Aragón—for more on the political ramifications of such alliances, see the report on negotiations between PP and Vox after the elections.

The minister also expressed gratitude to cultural sector representatives who continue to speak out against armed conflicts. In his view, supporting peace and upholding international norms remain key values for Spanish society.

Economic protection

Authorities assured that they will not allow a potential economic crisis caused by the conflict to impact citizens’ wallets. Mechanisms are already being discussed to enable a swift response to rising energy prices and housing rent. Possible measures include reinstating tools used during the war in Ukraine: capping electricity tariff increases, supporting low-income families, and overseeing the rental market.

The minister recalled that the government had previously succeeded with such measures as the “Iberian exception” to stabilize electricity prices, as well as providing special subsidies for utility bills. These tools could be reactivated if the situation worsens. Authorities emphasize they are ready to act quickly and decisively to prevent a decline in living standards.

Guarantees for citizens

Amid ongoing uncertainty, the government aims to maintain calm among the public. Officials emphasize that Spain will not engage in military actions without an international mandate, and all efforts will focus on protecting the domestic market and the interests of citizens. Authorities pledge to keep the public informed at every step and to base their decisions on the current realities of global markets.

According to RUSSPAIN.COM, additional support measures may be introduced if necessary to cushion the impact of external shocks on the country’s economy. The authorities are also considering the possibility of temporarily regulating prices for essential goods and services if the situation in the energy market spirals out of control.

In recent years, Spain has already faced the consequences of international conflicts, which led to rising fuel and food prices. During the war in Ukraine, the government introduced temporary subsidies and capped electricity tariffs to shield the population from inflation. Such measures helped stabilize the situation and avoided a sharp drop in purchasing power. Now, the authorities are prepared to repeat this approach if necessary, in order to preserve economic stability and support citizens amid new challenges.
