This weekend, residents across Spain will face a true test from nature. Most of the country is set to be hit by heavy rains, affecting both the west and the south of the Iberian Peninsula. In some regions, the rainfall will be especially intense and prolonged, with wind gusts reaching dangerous levels.
As early as Friday, certain autonomous communities such as Extremadura and Castilla y León have declared heightened weather warnings. Throughout the day, these alerts will be extended to other areas, and by evening, wind gusts will intensify, particularly in mountainous regions and along the Atlantic coast. Temperatures will begin to drop noticeably, and this trend is set to continue into next week, with thermometers dipping below seasonal averages.
The storm isn’t backing down: which areas will see the worst of it
The atmospheric front, which peaked in strength the previous day, will linger over Spain longer than usual. The most difficult situation is expected in western Andalucía, the Pyrenees, the Central System, western Galicia, the Cantabrian Mountains, and the Alborán area. These regions can expect downpours that may cause local flooding. Winds will be particularly strong in the mountains of Mallorca, in the north and center of the country, as well as along the eastern coast of Cantabria and the Atlantic shores. Snowfall is possible in the highlands of the Pyrenees, the Central System, and Sierra Nevada.
Weather warnings will remain in effect on Saturday, especially in the Pyrenees, the Central System, western Galicia, and the southwest of the peninsula. Here, rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms, and strong winds will persist, creating additional risks for residents and tourists.
Sunday: new waves of rainfall and temperature swings
By the end of the week, the storm will remain almost stationary off the northwestern coast of Galicia. This will bring dense cloud cover and fresh waves of precipitation. On Sunday morning, rain will fall in the southeastern regions, reaching the Balearic Islands by evening. In Galicia, especially in the west, rainfall will be the longest and heaviest. The Canary Islands, mainly the north, can also expect brief showers.
Temperatures will continue to fall, particularly in the northeastern areas, northern Meseta Sur, and the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile, the Alboran region, the southeastern mountains, and some inland parts of Catalonia may see a slight rise in temperatures. On Sunday, highs will dip in the Ebro Valley and eastern Spain, while the southwest and western Alboran Sea will experience a bit of warmth. Frost is still possible at night in the mountains.
