Rain and Fog to Sweep Across Spain: Weather Forecast for the Coming Weekend

Heavy Rain and Sharp Drop in Temperatures: Where to Expect Bad Weather

A powerful Atlantic cyclone is approaching Spain, bringing heavy rain, fog, and snow. Most regions will see significant changes in weather. Find out which areas will be hardest hit.

Spain is about to experience another change in the weather as a new Atlantic front approaches, bringing heavy rainfall, dense fog, and a noticeable drop in temperatures. Starting Thursday, skies will become increasingly overcast across many regions, with the first signs of unsettled weather appearing in some provinces. Residents on both the mainland and the Canary Islands will feel the impact of this new cyclone.

During the morning hours, fog blankets the country’s interior, especially both Mesetas, the Ebro Valley, and central Catalonia. Visibility is sharply reduced in these areas, prompting the declaration of a yellow weather alert in provinces like Huesca, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona, Navarra, and La Rioja. In Galicia, specifically in the province of A Coruña, warnings have been issued due to waves and rough seas, and by evening, heavy rains are expected in the western part of the region.

Weather anomalies

On Friday, the weather situation will intensify as the front actively moves across the Iberian Peninsula, bringing downpours to western areas. In mountain ranges such as the Montes de Toledo and the Central System, snow is expected. The snow line will drop to 1,200–1,400 meters in the northwest and to 1,500–1,800 meters in central regions. Temperatures in Mediterranean areas will fall, while in the rest of the country they will remain about the same.

On the same day, a small DANA (high-altitude atmospheric depression) is expected to form in the Bay of Cádiz area, intensifying rainfall and triggering thunderstorms in the south and coastal Mediterranean regions. The province of Huelva faces the risk of heavy rain, with up to 15 liters of water per square meter potentially falling within an hour. Weather warnings have been issued for rough seas in Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, as well as the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, while A Coruña will be placed on orange alert.

A rainy weekend ahead

Saturday and Sunday will bring no relief: the rain will continue, and in some areas intensify due to the influence of DANA. The situation is expected to be particularly challenging around the Alboran Sea, along the Andalusian coast, in Murcia, Ceuta, and Melilla. Brief but intense downpours and thunderstorms are possible in these areas. Air temperatures will drop in most regions, though a slight increase is possible in the northwest.

Coastal areas remain at risk of rough seas and strong winds, which may disrupt port operations and shipping. Inland regions of the country will face thick fog that could persist until midday, making road travel difficult.

Outlook

At the start of next week, DANA will shift southward, affecting Morocco, then move toward northern Algeria and Tunisia. As a result, these weather anomalies may reach the Balearic Islands, where rainfall and a temporary drop in temperatures are also expected. Overall, unstable weather will persist at least until midweek, so residents and visitors should be prepared for sudden changes.

In case you didn’t know, AEMET is Spain’s national meteorological agency, responsible for monitoring weather conditions, issuing warnings about extreme phenomena, and publishing official forecasts. The organization regularly updates weather data for all regions of the country and issues special alerts for the public and emergency services. Thanks to AEMET’s work, people in Spain can prepare in advance for adverse weather conditions and minimize potential risks.
