This summer, Spain experienced an unusually prolonged heat wave, but in recent days, temperatures in some regions have begun to drop. The reason is a mass of cold air, which is gradually shifting toward the Mediterranean Sea. It will soon be replaced, as early as Sunday, by DANA—an atmospheric phenomenon capable of dramatically changing weather conditions.
Meteorologists note that DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) is characterized by a cold core surrounded by warmer air, as well as cyclonic wind patterns. Although many associate DANA with heavy rainfall, such storms are not always guaranteed. This time, forecasts among experts vary: some models predict severe thunderstorms, while others expect more moderate precipitation.
At the start of the week, clouds and fog are expected in Galicia, northern Cantabria, the upper Ebro region, and along the eastern Mediterranean coast. Inland areas of the southeast and western Andalusia will also be affected by clouds gradually moving eastward. In the northern part of the country, showers and thunderstorms are possible by evening.
Meteorological models do not agree on how the situation will unfold. American forecasts suggest a high probability of severe storms in eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands from Sunday through Monday. European experts, on the contrary, expect less intense rainfall. Specialists emphasize that the situation may change literally by the hour, so residents are advised to follow updates.
In Navarre and northern Aragon, meteorologists are warning of possible heavy rain, which may be accompanied by hail and strong gusts of wind. Predominantly cloudy weather is forecast for the northern Canary Islands. Meanwhile, winds are expected to pick up and temperatures to gradually drop on mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Thus, the upcoming weekend may bring sudden changes in the weather. Residents and visitors are advised to prepare for showers, thunderstorms, and colder temperatures, especially in the northern and eastern regions. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the development of DANA and promise to provide timely updates on any changes.
