A conference bringing together Spanish ambassadors from around the world has concluded in Madrid. At the closing ceremony, King Felipe VI delivered a speech that sounded a warning for all of Europe. The monarch did not hide his concern: according to him, relations between Europe and the United States are teetering on the brink. He noted that keeping this alliance alive is becoming increasingly difficult, and diplomats need both resilience and considerable courage.
Felipe VI reminded the audience that the world order established after World War II became the cornerstone for democracy and stability across the continent. However, in his view, that order is now under threat. The king did not mention any names, but his words clearly alluded to the unpredictable actions of the American administration, especially in light of recent events in Venezuela.
A Test for the Alliance
The monarch stressed that preserving the transatlantic partnership is not just a task for politicians, but for all Europeans. He called for mutual trust, honesty, and respect for international rules. His address included a reproach to those violating these norms, even if they are allies. Felipe VI made it clear: if Europe and the US ultimately part ways, everyone will lose.
The king paid special attention to the situation in Venezuela. He expressed his relief over the release of five Spaniards detained in that country and stressed that Spaniards are ready to support a peaceful transition to democracy. At the same time, Felipe VI made it clear that only Venezuelans themselves have the right to decide their own destiny, not outside forces.
Challenges of the modern era
For the first time in a long while, the king openly commented on events in Latin America. He did not echo the government’s stance, which sharply condemned military intervention, but he made it clear that Spain stands firm in defending international law. In his words, one cannot silently accept violations of these principles, even if perpetrated by the world’s most powerful actors.
Felipe VI cautioned that if we abandon the rules that have governed international relations for many years, the world risks regressing by a century. In today’s age of technology, this could have unpredictable consequences. He reminded that democracies bear a special responsibility for maintaining an order based on reason, not brute force.
Spain and Europe
The monarch also addressed Europe’s internal issues. He pointed out that despite criticism of international organizations such as the UN and the imperfections of international law, only cooperation and dialogue can bring the world closer to stability and development. In his view, the alternative is chaos and isolation.
Felipe VI emphasized that Spain remains a reliable ally and will not allow the continent’s future to be decided without its involvement. He cautioned against the temptation to pit national sovereignty against the European project. According to him, only by working together can EU countries strengthen their influence and protect the interests of their citizens.
Global Instability
In closing his address, the king once again returned to the topic of security. He stated that the fundamental pillars of global stability are currently under threat. Spain, he said, does not intend to stand aside and will defend the principles on which the postwar world was built.
His words conveyed both concern and a call to action. Felipe VI made it clear that Spain does not agree to having its future decided behind its back. At a time when traditional alliances are coming apart, the country is ready to defend its interests and support those who believe in the power of international law and cooperation.
