A new scandal is brewing in the lower house of the Spanish parliament: the Sumar party has officially announced its intention to summon representatives of the Vox party and its youth wing, Revuelta, for a hearing. The reason is suspicions of misappropriating tens of thousands of euros collected to aid victims of the devastating DANA weather event.
Sumar deputy Nahuel González, who serves as the first vice chairman of the parliamentary committee, stated that the issue of summoning will be put to a vote by the working group. According to him, the scale of the possible violations remains unclear, but even within the far-right ranks, there have been allegations of abuse. González emphasized that the trust of citizens had been exploited for personal gain and described the situation as highly alarming.
Internal conflict
In early November, several Revuelta leaders resigned, and a few weeks later filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office alleging possible fraud. According to them, the organization’s leadership ignored demands for transparency and an audit, and also withheld information about the management of funds.
Former Revuelta vice-president Arturo Villarroya González publicly accused the current leadership of serious violations, including misappropriation of funds and collecting membership fees without granting corresponding rights. In his statement, he cited Revuelta president Jaime Hernández Zúñiga and his close associates Santiago Aneiros and Pablo González Gasca.
Counter-accusations
In response to these statements, Revuelta accused Vox of attempting to interfere with and control the youth organization. On social media, Revuelta representatives claimed they were pressured by individuals linked to Vox who allegedly tried to take over the structure and influence its decisions.
Revuelta also accused former colleagues of coordinated efforts to discredit the organization at the behest of political leaders and out of personal ambition. According to them, the real motives behind these actions will soon become clear to the public.
Parliamentary initiative
Sumar has already held preliminary talks with the Socialists, who have expressed interest in supporting the initiative. However, summoning representatives from Vox and Revuelta will require a majority vote of the committee, including Junts and Podemos. González expressed confidence that the necessary votes will be secured.
It has not yet been decided which representatives from Vox and Revuelta will be called to testify. González noted that it would be logical to summon Vox leader Santiago Abascal to clarify the relationship between the party and the youth movement, as well as to reveal details of the events.
Further developments
The scandal over the alleged embezzlement of funds collected for DANA victims continues to escalate. Questions of transparency and accountability among political organizations are once again in the spotlight of Spanish society. The parliamentary committee is expected to set a date soon for a vote on summoning witnesses.
In case you didn’t know, Vox is a Spanish ultra-conservative party founded in 2013 that has significantly strengthened its position in parliament in recent years. Revuelta is the youth wing of Vox, created to attract young supporters and promote the party’s ideas among young people. Internal conflicts and accusations against the leadership of Revuelta have drawn close attention not only from politicians but also from the broader public.
