The Spanish government has officially nominated Teresa Peramato for the position of Attorney General. This decision has sparked lively debate within the professional community. The Unión Progresista de Fiscales (UPF), which was previously led by Peramato herself, expressed clear satisfaction with the choice. At the same time, two other associations—the Asociación de Fiscales (AF) and the Asociación Profesional Independiente de Fiscales (APIF)—responded with restraint, though they acknowledged her qualifications.
Teresa Peramato’s experience and professional background
Peramato has an impressive record, with over 35 years of service in the prosecutor’s office—far exceeding the minimum requirements for such a high post. Since 2021, she has held the highest rank of ‘Prosecutor of the Chamber.’ Even her critics, which is rare in such a polarized field, acknowledge her professionalism and competence.
Cristina Dexeus, head of the AF, emphasized that Peramato has an impeccable reputation and an outstanding career. Although the association previously opposed her appointment as head of the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division, this position was based more on political disagreements than on any personal objections to Peramato herself.
Response from the professional community
UPF highlighted Peramato’s professional integrity and principled character, calling her the embodiment of the best qualities of a prosecutor. The association believes her appointment will strengthen the independence and authority of the prosecution service, as well as protect the rights of the most vulnerable citizens, especially victims of violence.
UPF believes that Peramato is capable of ensuring a modern and independent approach to the agency’s work, which is especially important at a time when the prosecution service faces serious challenges and the need to restore public trust.
Scandals and expectations for the new chief
Peramato’s appointment comes against the backdrop of a recent scandal involving the resignation of former Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz. He was removed from office after a court ruling in a case over the disclosure of official secrets, which led to a serious crisis of confidence in the prosecution institution.
Miguel Pallarés, head of APIF, noted that the government chose a candidate whose views are close to the former leadership. According to him, final conclusions about Peramato’s work can only be made after her first few months in the new post.
Challenges and prospects for the prosecution service
The new Attorney General faces the challenge of restoring the reputation of the institution and strengthening its independence. The legal community hopes that Peramato will be able to establish dialogue between various groups within the prosecutor’s office and restore public trust in the institution.
Questions about the political neutrality and objectivity of the prosecutor’s office remain in the spotlight. The new leader is expected to demonstrate not only professionalism, but also the ability to resist pressure and defend the rule of law, regardless of political circumstances.
