General Prosecutor’s Trial: Key Testimony from Ayuso’s Chief of Staff and New Revelations

Leaked letter and Madrid president's entourage at the center of growing courtroom drama

The court case over the leak of confidential information is entering a new phase. Ayuso’s chief of staff and other witnesses have revealed unexpected details. Investigators are working to establish who was behind the leak and how it influenced the proceedings.

A high-profile trial continues in Madrid, where for the first time in modern Spanish history the Attorney General is sitting in the dock. The second day of hearings began with a delay, but quickly picked up pace: participants whose testimonies could alter the course of the case appeared in court.

At the center of attention were the chief of staff to the president of the Madrid autonomy, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, as well as the regional head’s partner and their lawyer. Their interrogations proved crucial to understanding how information about the alleged tax fraud—totaling over 350,000 euros—emerged and spread.

The court was set to hear not only from Rodríguez, but also from prosecutors responsible for communications and support. Their role is to shed light on who and when gained access to the disputed email that became the centerpiece of the investigation. The charge of disclosing confidential information revolves around this email: it contained details of the case against the Madrid president’s partner, and its publication sparked widespread public debate.

Testimonies and new versions of events

During the hearings, it emerged that the accused’s lawyer may himself have breached confidentiality by circulating the contents of the email. The Attorney General’s defense argues that those close to the regional president orchestrated the information campaign to deflect attention from the allegations and create an alternative narrative.

Before Rodriguez took the floor, the court heard testimony from press officers of the prosecutor’s office as well as representatives of the departments involved in the case. Their statements helped reconstruct the chain of document transfers and identify who might have been involved in the leak. Special attention was paid to how the information ended up in the hands of journalists and was distorted in the publications.

The influence of those involved and their motives

The chief of staff to the President of Madrid is accused of fabricating a false narrative about an alleged deal offered by prosecutors to the defendant. In reality, as was revealed, the initiative came from the defense attorney, not from the prosecution. During the investigation, Rodriguez admitted spreading the version about pressuring the prosecutors to amplify the political impact and discredit opponents.

The letter at the center of the scandal was sent out in March 2024, following a publication in one of the country’s leading media outlets. The article claimed that the prosecutor’s office had proposed a deal, though the facts indicated otherwise. Now the court must determine who first accessed the letter and why it was made available to third parties before being officially delivered to prosecutors.

What’s next in the trial

On the first day of hearings, the attorney general’s defense argued that investigators were excessively persistent and exerted pressure. Meanwhile, the prosecution maintained that the attorney general’s actions were within the law and that requesting documents was essential for an objective investigation.

The presiding judge determined that the evidence collected is sufficient to proceed with a substantive hearing. Now the key question is who orchestrated the leak and for what purpose, and whether it was part of a political game. The answers to these questions could not only affect the fate of those involved, but also set new standards of transparency for the entire justice system.
