A scandal has erupted in the Spanish province of Burgos involving the Belorado monastery. Two former nuns, previously members of this religious community, were detained by the Civil Guard. They are accused of selling works of art with significant historical and cultural value online. Among the items seized was a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua (San Antonio de Padua), dating back to the 17th century. An antique dealer from León was also arrested along with the women, as investigators allege he assisted in the sales.
Both women were excommunicated in June 2024 for acts of religious schism. They, along with the detained antiques expert, are now awaiting a court decision in the city of Briviesca, where the investigation is ongoing. Authorities suspect them of crimes related to the unlawful appropriation and sale of items that are part of the national historical heritage.
According to the Civil Guard, these are serious violations, as the items offered for sale are of special value to Spanish culture and history. Investigators warn that such actions could cause irreparable damage to the country’s heritage. All three detainees are currently in custody and await court interrogation.
