In the heart of Asturias, atop the Farrapona Pass (Alto de la Farrapona), a new architectural landmark has emerged that is already attracting the attention of tourists and locals alike. This is an observation deck designed as a closed loop, offering visitors a 360-degree panoramic view over the Saliencia Valley and the mountains of the Cantabrian Range.
This viewpoint is situated at the highest automobile-accessible point in the province, in the Puerto de Somiedo area, a long-time favorite among hikers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts. The architects aimed to create a space where every visitor can fully immerse themselves in the landscape, walk along the 360-degree viewing platform, and return to their starting point.
The structure rests on four columns, minimizing impact on the soil and creating a sense of lightness. Nine large elements were used in its construction, which were assembled at a specialized facility more than a hundred kilometers from the installation site. After delivery, the components were installed on site using lifting equipment.
Along the route, information panels highlight nine geological features of the area. These signs are discreetly integrated into the railings so as not to obstruct the view or distract from the experience of nature.
Particular attention was paid to materials and technical solutions. The platform and railings are made of durable metal, resistant to sudden temperature fluctuations typical for this region: winters here are harshly cold, while summer temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees. Unlike wood, metal requires little maintenance and retains its properties even in harsh conditions.
The surface of the platform is made from perforated metal sheets shaped like droplets. This design prevents the accumulation of water and snow, which is especially important in winter. An unexpected effect of this solution is a unique ‘voice’ of the observation deck: in strong winds, the platform produces melodic sounds, adding a special atmosphere to the visit.
The designers also ensured convenience for all categories of visitors. The entrance and exit are at the same level, providing easy access for people with disabilities and parents with strollers.
The implementation of this project became possible after winning a competition organized by the Somiedo municipality. The new observation point became part of a large-scale program to promote the natural, ethnographic, and geological heritage of Asturias. The architectural solution combines engineering innovation, respect for the landscape, and an original artistic approach, turning an ordinary walk into a complete sensory adventure.
The observation deck at Farpone has already become a new attraction for tourists and locals, offering not only unique views but also an unusual experience of connecting with nature. This site highlights Asturias’ commitment to developing eco-tourism and preserving the richness of local landscapes for future generations.
