Valencia Court Investigates Deaths of 37 Telecare Users After Flooding

Tragedy in Valencia unfolds with new details – Judge demands explanations from authorities

A judge in Valencia has launched an investigation into the deaths of 37 people who were using telecare services during the catastrophic flood in October 2024. Authorities are required to provide documents and explanations.

In October 2024, the Valencian Community found itself at the center of one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent years. The flood, which claimed 229 lives, left behind not only ruins but also many unanswered questions. Now, the court’s attention is focused on the fate of 37 residents who were under telecare supervision when the disaster struck the region.

A judge from Catarroja has decided to focus the investigation specifically on these deaths. Regional authorities and the company responsible for telecare are under scrutiny. The legal proceedings began after a civic organization demanded clarification on whether all protocols had been followed and how those in charge responded at the critical moment.

As part of the investigation, the judge has requested from the vice president of the Valencian government (Susana Camarero) a complete list of the deceased, as well as documentation related to the telecare operator contract. There is particular interest in how emergency actions were organized and what directives were issued by the leadership in the lead-up to and during the flood. The court is also examining whether officials consulted the meteorological service when a red alert was issued due to heavy rainfall.

Information revealing that 16% of all those who died during the flood were using tele-assistance services came to light after the vice president responded to an opposition request in the regional parliament. This fact sparked a strong public reaction and raised questions about the effectiveness of emergency services. Tensions escalated further when it became known that a key official had left the coordination center during the crisis to attend an award ceremony.

The investigation is ongoing, and the public now expects the authorities to provide not only explanations but also concrete measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The court case could set a precedent for the entire country, as it concerns the lives of the most vulnerable citizens who entrusted their safety to the state.
