The Vox party has initiated legal proceedings against Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of giving false testimony in the Senate. The lawsuit was prompted by Sánchez’s statement during a parliamentary hearing, in which he denied knowing businessman Anxón Alonso, who is believed to have close ties to former PSOE organization secretary Santos Cerdán.
At a press conference, Vox representatives emphasized that their appeal to the Supreme Court is based on suspicions of perjury. According to the party, Sánchez’s statement contradicts media reports alleging that Alonso arranged a meeting in 2018 between Sánchez, Cerdán, and EH Bildu leader Arnaldo Otegi. Journalists claim this meeting took place shortly before the historic no-confidence vote that brought PSOE to power. Otegi himself, however, denies that such contact occurred.
Vox demands Sánchez and meeting participants be questioned
As part of the preliminary investigation, Vox insists that not only Sánchez, but also everyone who may have attended the meeting should be questioned. The party is also demanding the submission of documents that could confirm or refute the existence of any acquaintance between the prime minister and the businessman.
Attention has also focused on the role of Anchon Alonso, who is linked to key PSOE figures. According to Vox, he may have acted as a mediator in organizing talks between the Socialists and EH Bildu. However, officials deny that such contacts took place, and Sánchez himself insists on his non-involvement.
Political repercussions and reactions from both sides
The scandal over the prime minister’s alleged lies sparked widespread outcry in political circles. Vox claims that the current cabinet relies on support from radical forces, which they argue undermines the government’s legitimacy. Party representatives openly express their distrust of the statements made by those involved, especially given the conflicting information coming from various sources.
Meanwhile, PSOE sees Vox’s accusations as an attempt to destabilize the political situation and discredit the country’s leadership. Party insiders emphasize that all actions by the prime minister are in line with the law, and any suspicions of wrongdoing are unfounded.
Further developments and public response
While the Supreme Court reviews the complaint, public attention is riveted on the details of the investigation. The question of whether there truly was contact between Sánchez and Alonso remains unanswered. If the allegations are confirmed, the consequences for the prime minister’s political career could be severe.
The situation is further complicated by the involvement of other participants in the case, including representatives of EH Bildu and key figures from PSOE. Additional interrogations and document reviews are expected soon, which could shed light on the circumstances of the meeting in question. Regardless of the outcome, this scandal has already become one of the most talked-about topics in Spanish politics for 2025.
