Implementation of housing initiatives
Spain continues to implement a large-scale program to provide citizens with new apartments. Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda Isabel Rodríguez reported that nearly 100,000 properties have already been allocated out of the more than 180,000 promised during the election campaign by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. According to Rodríguez, the distribution of housing is taking place at both the national and regional levels, depending on the involvement of the autonomous communities.
Challenges and prospects
The minister noted that housing affordability remains one of the country’s most pressing issues. She emphasized that solving this problem requires time and a comprehensive approach. As an example, Rodríguez cited the new Campamento district project in Madrid, where demolition of old buildings will soon begin, with construction set to start later this year.
Future plans and cooperation with the regions
As part of preparations for the new national housing plan for 2026–2030, the minister held a meeting with representatives of the autonomous communities. Rodríguez expressed confidence in a constructive dialogue with regional authorities and dismissed claims that community proposals are being ignored. She noted that many suggestions have already been incorporated into the draft and expressed hope for continued cooperation.
Political nuances and budget priorities
The minister emphasized that she views the new plan as an agreement between responsible government bodies, not as a political deal between the government and the opposition. Rodríguez expressed skepticism regarding the participation of the Popular Party and its leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, yet stated she remains open to dialogue. In her view, consensus on housing issues is necessary, and most administrations already support this approach.
Housing at the center of budget policy
Speaking about the upcoming state budget discussions, Rodríguez acknowledged that the process will not be easy. Nevertheless, she expressed confidence that the government would be able to secure support despite the complex political landscape. The minister assured that housing policy would be one of the main budget items, and that the authorities would continue to work on expanding access to housing for the population.
