Israel Prepares to Deploy Unique Iron Beam Laser System

Laser vs. Drones: Israel Deploys Revolutionary Air Defense System

Israel has completed testing of the Iron Beam combat laser. The system can intercept drones and missiles within seconds. It is the world’s first high-powered laser interceptor of its kind.

Israel has completed testing of its latest defense system, Iron Beam, which will soon be integrated into the country’s national air defense. This laser system, with a power output of 100 kilowatts, can destroy aerial threats almost instantly and at a much lower cost than traditional missile interceptors. The development is a response to the increasing threat posed by drones and short-range rockets, which existing systems do not always handle effectively.

For several weeks, engineers and military personnel carried out intensive tests of Iron Beam in conditions as close as possible to real combat. The laser successfully hit a range of targets—from rockets to drones and other aerial vehicles—demonstrating high precision and reliability. Defense officials point out that the new technology will significantly reduce the cost of intercepting each target, which is especially important during mass attacks.

A Technological Breakthrough

Iron Beam will become the fifth layer in Israel’s multi-tiered air defense system, joining such well-known systems as ‘Iron Dome’, ‘David’s Sling’, Arrow-2, and Arrow-3. While existing systems are up to 95% effective against rockets and ballistic missiles, their success rate against low-flying drones is much lower—sometimes not exceeding 50%. The new laser system was created specifically to counter these types of threats.

Iron Beam stands out for its ability to target small, slow-moving objects that often evade radar and conventional interceptors. The laser beam literally vaporizes the target within seconds, leaving it no chance to maneuver or escape. At the same time, the cost of a single shot is just fractions of a cent, making the system extremely economical compared to expensive missiles.

Testing and prospects

During tests, Iron Beam has repeatedly demonstrated its effectiveness against various types of threats. The system has successfully intercepted rockets, mortar shells, and drones, which have become one of the main challenges for Israeli air defense in recent years. According to the military, the laser has proven to be a reliable means of protection during intense attacks and in challenging weather conditions.

The introduction of Iron Beam is expected to not only improve Israel’s security, but also significantly reduce defense spending. Unlike missile systems, where a single interception can cost tens of thousands of dollars, the laser system requires minimal maintenance and operational costs. This opens up new opportunities for the widespread use of the technology in the future.

The future of air defense

Experts note that the emergence of a combat laser of this class could shift the balance of power in the region and serve as an example for other countries aiming to modernize their air defense systems. Israel is already considering exporting Iron Beam, as well as further developing this technology to increase its power and range.

In the coming years, the system is expected to be integrated into the existing air defense infrastructure. This will enable the creation of a truly multi-layered shield against a wide range of threats—from rocket barrages to kamikaze drone attacks. In the future, similar systems may appear in other countries where the issue of unmanned threats is becoming increasingly urgent.

If you weren’t aware, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is a leading Israeli defense manufacturer specializing in the development of innovative systems for the military and security forces. This company created Iron Beam, as well as other well-known systems such as Iron Dome and David’s Sling. Rafael actively works with government entities and exports its products to dozens of countries worldwide.
