EU New Car Market Drops by 0.7% by July 2025

Los coches eléctricos e híbridos ganan terreno, mientras los de gasolina pierden cuota

From January to July 2025, new car sales in the European Union fell by 0.7%, totaling 6.49 million vehicles. However, July marked the most successful month of the year, with registrations rising by 7.4%. Electric and hybrid vehicles continue to gain market share, displacing traditional petrol and diesel models.

According to the latest data, 6.49 million new cars were registered in European Union countries in the first seven months of 2025, a 0.7% decrease compared to the same period last year. Despite the overall decline, July marked a record month for growth: the number of new registrations rose by 7.4% to reach 914,680 units.

Experts note that total sales volume remains below pre-crisis levels. Market dynamics continue to be affected by challenging economic conditions, trade restrictions, and the shift by automakers toward greener technologies.

The electric vehicle segment maintains a stable market share. By July 2025, fully electric cars accounted for 15.6% of all sales in the EU—a figure unchanged from the results of the first half of the year. Over seven months, more than 1 million electric vehicles were sold, with over 142,000 registered in July alone. The greatest surge in demand for electric cars was seen in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, where sales increased by 38.4%, 17.6%, and 6.5% respectively. Meanwhile, France reported a 4.3% decline over seven months, although July showed positive momentum.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) have also strengthened their position. Their share of total sales grew to 8.6%, up from 6.9% a year earlier. From January to July, more than 561,000 such cars were registered, with demand in Spain, Germany, and Italy nearly doubling.

Conventional hybrids (HEV) remain the most popular type of new car in Europe. In seven months, sales reached 2.25 million units, accounting for 34.7% of the market. The largest increase was recorded in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. In July, hybrid sales grew by 14.3% compared to last year.

At the same time, cars with traditional internal combustion engines continue to lose ground. Sales of petrol vehicles in the EU fell by 20.1% over seven months, with their market share dropping from 35.1% to 28.3%. The most significant decline was seen in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Diesel vehicles are also losing ground: their sales decreased by 26.4%, and the market share amounted to 9.5%.

Overall, the share of petrol and diesel cars in new car sales in the EU fell to 37.8% compared to 47.9% a year earlier. Thus, the electrification of the European car fleet is accelerating, and demand for environmentally friendly models is growing even amid a general market decline.
