Birch Grove with a Unique Microclimate – An Autumn Wonder of Nature Near Madrid

This enchanting forest near Madrid holds a secret. You must see it this autumn!

Just outside the capital lies an amazing place whose natural landscape evokes the northern latitudes. In autumn, this spot is especially beautiful. Discover a family-friendly route to this enchanting location.

Just an hour’s drive from the bustling metropolis, and you find yourself in a completely different reality, where the air smells of damp foliage and a golden carpet rustles underfoot. In the Sierra Norte mountains, at the foot of the Sierra de la Morcuera, lies a forest massif that many residents of the Spanish capital have yet to discover. As the seasons change, it transforms into a true spectacle, painted in thousands of shades of yellow and crimson.

This is Abedular de Canencia, a true natural treasure located near the pass of the same name. It is known as an “island forest”—a relic, a fragment of ecosystems more typical of northern Europe, preserved here thanks to the unique climatic conditions. Birches, holly, yews, and cherry trees create a distinctive palette that stands out against the usual landscapes of the central Iberian Peninsula.

The journey begins at the rest area near the Canencia pass, where you can conveniently leave your car and get ready for a hike among the pines. From here, a forest road leads to the former environmental education center, El Hornillo. Even before reaching it, travelers are greeted by a surprise – a few Douglas fir trees. This introduced species stands out noticeably against the local flora, adding an exotic touch to the landscape. The trail, known as the Senda del Arroyo del Sestil del Maillo, offers a circular route ranging from 4.5 to 7.6 kilometers, depending on the chosen path. The walk takes between one and a half to two and a half hours and requires no special training, making it accessible for people of all ages.

A few meters after the fir trees is one of the most photographed spots – the viewpoint overlooking the Chorrera de Mojonavalle waterfall. Water cascades down rocks covered with ferns, creating a truly magical atmosphere against a crimson and yellow backdrop. From here, the trail turns right and gently descends into the heart of the birch grove. Many people do not even realize that such beauty exists so close to home, where you can lose yourself among fallen leaves accompanied by the constant murmur of water.

You can reach this hidden corner via the M-629 highway, which connects Miraflores de la Sierra and Canencia. Alternatively, take the M-607 road, turn towards Soto del Real, and continue on the M-611 until the turnoff for the pass. For those who prefer public transportation, bus No. 725 runs from Madrid’s Plaza de Castilla to Miraflores de la Sierra, where you can take a taxi to the starting point of the hiking trail.
