Far from the bustling beaches of Costa del Sol, nestled in the mountainous region of Málaga province, lies a natural gem that is attracting more visitors every year. This is the so-called Cueva del Gato, located in the municipality of Benaoján within the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema. Thanks to its stunning scenery, this spot has become a social media sensation and offers a refreshing alternative to the traditional seaside holiday.
The main attraction here is a natural pool with crystal-clear, icy-cold water, known as Charco Frío. It forms at the cave’s mouth, where a powerful stream emerges from the complex underground karst system Hundidero-Gato. After a long subterranean journey, the water acquires an emerald hue, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding limestone cliffs and lush vegetation. The rock formation at the cave’s entrance is said by many to resemble a cat’s face, which is how the site got its name.
Beyond its beauty, Cueva del Gato has significant ecological importance. Inside the cave, which stretches for several kilometers, there are underground lakes, canyons, and geological formations up to sixty meters high. In addition, it is home to one of the largest bat colonies on the Iberian Peninsula. To preserve this unique ecosystem and ensure safety, access to the cave is strictly limited and allowed only for experienced speleologists with a special permit. However, the outer area with the natural pool is open for swimming and relaxation.
To prevent overcrowding and preserve the natural landscape, the Benaoján town hall has implemented an access control system during the high season. In the summer months of 2025, a symbolic entrance fee is charged. For adults, the price ranges from 2 to 2.5 euros, and for children from 1 to 1.5 euros, depending on the day of the week. The collected funds are used for maintaining cleanliness, ensuring visitor safety, and caring for the area. Getting to Cueva del Gato is quite easy: it is located just a few kilometers from the city of Ronda. Nearby, there are parking areas from which a short walking path leads to the natural pool.
